You ever turn a screw up into a solo?

At my last gig I was playing a pretty simple pattern and I messed up. I figure the one place I can't go wrong in an emergency situation is the root. So I hammer the root....... Ok so far so good....... Now what???

Well an octave of the root is just as good as the root itself no? Somehow or other I wasn't able to get back to where I was supposed to be from there, soooooo...... 4 bar solo!

All in all it worked itself out just fine.

You ever fix a mistake by making it REALLY obvious? Yeah man, I meant to do that........

dude, it happens to me at least 10 times a night...lol, just kidding...but YES!!! Have done this many a time...I think it's what separates the men from the boys.
In all seriousness, a great musician friend of mine always says, "it's not how you screw up, but how you recover from the screw up."
Sage words

Along those lines, I kind of HATE actual "assigned" bass solos. I just got into a band (LOVE working with these guys), and they love throwing me bass solos...and I'm like... "STOP!" lol...I get my most enjoyment from playing bass lines and coloring with brief, (hopefully) sweet fills.

I saw Michael Anthony of Van Halen produce a bunch of non-musical feedback, beat strings with his fist (not plucking, slapping or any other right hand technique, and doing only some muting with his left hand), and turn some somersaults with bass in hand-and it passed for a solo. But hey - It WAS a bass in the shape of a Jack Daniels bottle.

By his standards, what you did was virtuiostic.

Another blanket for screw-ups is too repeat it so that it sounds like you meant it the first time.

I've picked up some of my most profound solos, from mistakes.........you're 'sposed to learn form them

Such a shame that I don't gig with my piccolo anymore though....good times, good times..

Oh yeah, been there done that!

This was more like one of those 1970's car chase scenes where the lead car hits a ramp and ends up on 2 wheels and somehow manages to keep driving!

My drummer was the only guy that mentioned it after the fact.

A couple years ago, a version of one of my old bands got together to play a party - we did about 1/2 stuff we used to do, and then a whole bunch of more dancable stuff that we put in a the one rehearsal we had. Made setlists, knowing we'd prob change stuff up depending on the crowd, but had worked out a few segues and groupings to keep the flow.

So 1/2 way thru the night, were doing a scaled down version of MJ's "Billy Jean", and after the chorus, everyone stopped except the drummer.... so I kept playing the riff, everyone was looking over at me. I'm thinking "OK, people are dancing, I guess they want to keep it going!" ...so I start spicing up the riff, kinda do a solo but not TOO far out - wanna keep the groove. After a couple minutes, I look over, and they're all still looking back at me - strangely - so I keep playing and look down at my setlist.

Uhm - I completely forgot that in rehearsal we decided we were going from THAT point (where they stopped) in Billy Jean to the intro Beat It riff.......

Ooops....

Do it once and it's an EFF up... Do it twice and it's jazz...

Thats something I've done in Jam sessions, repeat it & it sounds like an avant garde expression.

My favourite screw up is to start playing a fill a bar too early...one time I was daydreaming and started a fill 4 bars too early so I just kept going for the entire 4 bars.

Playing Wolfmothers Joker and the Thief I had a habit of playing over the stops a second note...and then did that the whole song through so whenever the whole band stopped, the bass would play a single "doop" on its own. The band laughed but it went over the crowds head.

When I get lost, I often find an impromptu bass run gets me back on track. Sometimes it comes off as I meant it and sometimes its obvious to most that it was a coverup but either way all good training for live play.

I'm from the "do it again, like you meant it the first time" crowd.

For giggles, I will end on a note that has NOTHING to do with the actual final chord, and look around smugly, then ask:

"What, you can't HEAR that b13th as the ending note on that chord? ...pfft...tin-eared Philistines..."

That there is one o Miles Davis' greatest contributions to musical thought.. And a favorite of mine to get past notes I didn't mean to hit.. Immediately turns a gaff into ooh did you hear that hip tension I added there.. Let me play it again
