My band played a BOTB last Friday with 4 other local bands. There were two punk bands, a guitarist soloing over an MP3, a RHCP influenced punk/funk band and us. Anyway, I was stupid enough to allow everyone to use my bass amp. I'm way too nice sometimes. The moment the first punk band got on stage and started plugging in, I knew action had to be taken or my amp would not see another day. I helped their bassist 'set up' and sneakily hit the mute button. He started playing and yelled out through the mik, "Where the **** is the bass dude? His POS amp doesn't work and there is no sound coming out of it!" I quickly shot back saying, "Oh don't worry. That is how this amp works. Its a special amp and no sound is supposed to come out of it " The idiot just nodded his head while I almost burst out laughing. The amp was DO'd to the PA so he still got his trebly, mangly sound. He also said, "I hate this PA system. There's too much bass on it and bass sounds like ****." The band started playing and let me say that it was one of the worst things I have ever heard in my lifetime. I don't kid when I say that this performance was on par with the legendary, "Final Countdown" video. They got up, butchered their first number and then started yelling profanities through the mike like "This place sucks. Where is the ******* mosh pit you ****?" They began the second song and about 15 seconds in, they stopped. The lead guitard pics up the mike and calls the soundguy a dip**** for turning his awesome playing down and then proceeds to talk about how useless sound guys are and so on. The club owner looses it and brings in security to kick these a$$es out while the audience cheers.
Anyway, to back up my claim of their horrific playing, here is a link to youtube for a snippet of the first song. it was recorded by someone in the audience and i just found it today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdxmBNnwgDk
My drummer's dad got the whole thing on camera and a nice Youtube montage is in the works. I hope you guys get a kick from this! Just Classic!

I guess since it was a battle, then I understand sabotaging the other guys, but how come you muted your amp with out even giving them a standing chance to play?
I mean, you agreed to let them all use your amp, but then you were f'in with them because they looked like punks - yes, it turned out they deserved it, but what if they were actually decent musicians?
I might be playing devil's advocate here, but wasn't that kind of a jerk move after you agreed they could use your gear??? |

It was at Capitol Club on Milwaukee, probably a block south of Montrose if that helps.
I had already listened to their myspace and I knew what they were about. I wouldn't do that to someone I didn't know. Another punk band came up that I wasn't familiar and and I unmuted the amp. Like I said, I knew what they were about because I went to their myspace and saw some of their other online videos. Everyone I talked to there said it was completely warranted and that I had good forsight.
Edit: One more point. The amp is a GK Backline. It's not designed to handle volume like that especially when there are two fridge size JBL's that it is competing with. If you had seen their website beforehand and knew what they were about, wouldn't you do the same thing? Anyway, its my stuff and I hold the discretion to do something like that after spending money on that rig. Just a precautionary action.

BTW how did the battle go? Did you guys win?
Capitol Club - I know exactly where that place is - I live near Montrose and Lakeshore.
What kinda gear did the other bands have? Did you have the nicest rig there or something?
A great example of why I never ask to use anyone's gear, and never let anyone use my gear. |

We did win the battle. The guys judging it were all older so our classic rock appealed to them. The other bands brought their own guitar amps, an assortment of marshalls and fenders, some crappy and some good.
I was really stupid to agree to that though man. Should've read one of the countless threads about the disasters that come out of sharing gear. It really kills me when fellow bassists don't understand that they are clipping my amp while I sit in pain in the audience waiting for the song to end so I can adjust them down |

i wouldnt hesitate to loan gear to a fellow bass player at a gig that a) I KNEW and knew his style and b) was on good terms with.
but if I am not OFFERING my rig to somebody, they shall NOT be playing it. or asking ME to use it. |
