"You know any Jaco?"

Sign in to disble this ad
I was researching some sound clips for some basses I'm looking at, and came across this:

YouTube - Ibanez SR506

There's a metal player demoing a bass, and he can't figure out what to play, and the cameraman goes from saying "play a classic metal lick" to "You know any Jaco Pastorius? You look like you're that fast of a player".

Thought TB would appreciate that.

I know of a few guys who can play a lot of notes and still groove. He, however, seems to be a "typical" metal player who lets his guitarist write all his lines, so they're all sweeps and such.

And what's up with his pinkies?! Scary.

The pinky was kind of creeping me out too. In fact, I cant even get my pinky in that position if I try.

I can. But it's not that long and pointy and spiderlike and generally terrifying.

I predict that within two days, this thread becomes divided between those thinking this clip is great and the bassist is solid and those that find something to bash about it.

Then, the bassist in the video will show up and comment on the commentary about his playing and fingers, some heated discussions will ensue, he'll make some comments and so will TB, then the mods will step in and tell us all to settle down, and then someone will turn it back into a big joke.

Then the cameraman will join in and defend the bassist which will start it all over again after which the mods will slam it shut, penalize the worst offenders and the hordes will move on to the next victim thread...

All for Beej's prediction, say aye.

Personaly, I predict that many of us find many lulz for awhile, and then some people come in and comment on the bassist's technique and why it's great for metal because it's so br00tal. This then branches off into discussions about technique and br00tality. Then, of course, we have to question if the bassist is playing the best bass for metal. He's certainly got the best pinkies for metal.

I forgot to add the massive derail about his pinky.

But as long as it's about the video, derail all you want.

That's my contribution. I'm off to go start a thread in the Basses Forum entitled "SX Basses - Anybody Ever Heard of Them?"...

Man, viewing this thing again, his fingers are long but that pinky is freakish. I wish mine could do that, here I am stuck with these stubby little cocktail wieners. No wonder I can't play brutal metal worth a damn...

I know how you feel. Mine are smaller than the majority of the girls that I know. And these are high school girls. I'd not mind having that pinky if my hands were the size of his.

I'm curious to know, has he ever played with others? I see lots of guys in music stores playing lots of notes who wouldn't have a clue what to do in an actual band situation.

I think his pinky reminds me of the head crab from Half Life 2.
