Kesslari, you just brought a huge smile to my face! I do miss Jim Lacefield - great teacher, HONEST guy, pulled no punches. Miss him terribly.

How about: When Weird Al has covered one of your songs?

When the grocery bagger kid in another town recognizes you, and exclaims (embarrassingly loudly)
"Dude! You jam some awesome bass!"
My (now ex-) wife never let that one die.

How 'bout when 'respectable' musicians show up to your gigs just to listen to what you're up to.

...when you're happy with your ability, people you're performing with, in places you want to perform in, etc...

"Success" can be defined/measured by more than X albums sold, X kinds of people coming to your gigs, X dollar received for performance, etc...

While these are not my only benchmarks for success, I think it is important to think of "success" on larger, broader terms, and even more importantly, to not judge yourself as a "failure" if you don't meet someone else's definition of "success."

"just because you sell a million copies of your record doesn't mean you're good. McDonald's sells a million hamburgers a day."

- some record exec. from Atlantic (i think).

You know, when I was 18 my Dad was completely clueless! But he sure had learned a lot by the time I was 25!

when people you have never met before congratulate you on upstaging and outplaying the headlining band.

when people drive long distances just to see your band ...

on the other hand... if people come out to see you at all...
there's some success in that alone.

I don't think this is that serious of a thread.

How about when your fans ask you about tickets for shows you didn't even know you booked?

Beat me to it!

When someone stops you on the street and says "Hey! you guys are playing the (insert name here) fest coming up!" and you have no idea what they are talking about.

And you are the one who books the band.
