Hey Everyone!
Just Wondering, What Was The First Song Your Band Learnt?
My Band's First Was, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' It's A Shame, We've Played It So Many Times I Can't Stand Performing It And I Can't Even Listen To The Original Song Anymore :/
So What Was Yours?

Back to the question at hand I think the first cover I learned in a band was Misfits Skulls. Still love the song even though I've played it over 200+ times.
First song I ever learned to play was smoke on the water like 97% of us. |

We're opening up for The Tea Party on friday. I'm really not trying to sound arrogant, but I'm doing a helluva job, aren't I? Anyway, I wouldn't be opposed to playing a cover if it meets two requirements: 1. The original composer is either dead or not playing anymore, and 2. We can reinterpret it and make the song better.
Check out my band here: The Etchings - Home
Leonard Cohen is still alive and kicking I know, but here is a perfect example of Jeff Buckley taking a song written by someone else, reimagining it, and making it awesome: ‪Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah‬‏ - YouTube

Hendrix playing Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" Soooooo good. ‪Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower‬‏ - YouTube Quote:

The only cover I ever played was One Dying wish by Saetia. We butchered it. But it was still a ton of fun to play!

Anyway....One of the first covers I had learned when I was with my origional band was "100%" from Sonic Youth. Me and the drummer were just messing arround one day with it while the guitar player and singer were having a smoke break.
I had another band who had similar requierments for picking covers. The band leader wanted to do songs that people would recognize, but were not that popular. Our first cover there was "Band On The Run" from Wings. We also did "Drift Away" from Dobie Grey, but stopped when Uncle Cracker re-did it (for the record, I think Uncle Cracker did a great job with that song. Bonus points for bringing in Dobie Grey to re-cut the bridge).

Anything Sonic Youth would be fun as hell to cover! For the record, I'm often envious of guys like you making the BIG BUCKS doing cover songs! Seems like thats what a lot of big, PAYING venues are looking for these days!

We tend to pick covers that are nothing like our music just for fun.
The last one was a whole set of Cars tunes for a The Cars vs The Violent Femmes showcase. That was a fun one.

First thrash song I liked, and it was an acquired taste, believe me! (I was mainly listening to Run DMC, 2 LIve Crew and NWA at the time - not bad for a white aussie 16yo!!!)
First song that made me say "teach me bass".
First song I learned right through.
First song I jammed correctly to the CD.
First song I ever jammed with a band on
AND
First song my first band covered.
Now if we are talking a working band, the very first song I played live and was paid for was "I Want To Break Free" by Queen.

I was 14 in 1991, so that was the song to go for I "sung" it, and did a solo on a very out of tune Bamboo flute. Thank god noone heard us (exept my parents maybe).
Oh fun times, we all felt so awesome lol.
