"You're not supposed to hear the bassist..."

Sign in to disble this ad
From a brilliant post mocking "mysterious guy hardcore", this genius quote, probably the best reason anybody's ever given for why you should not be able to hear the bass:

"You’re not supposed to hear the bassist who keeps everything shrouded in mystery by probably never being plugged in"

Hahahaha. Here's the whole post.

It worked for the Sex Pistols. And 90% of the 80's hair metal bands.

Also worked for Metallica's "And Justice For All" album, which should have been named "No Justice For Jason".

I can understand not going bonkers and cranking the bass in the mix, but not eliminating bass altogether.

I can. As a bassist, it makes your parts impossible to screw up, so you don't have to stress over them. As a band, you don't have to look like losers who couldn't find a bassist. Everybody wins!

thats awesome.
I also have gotten this in school, by seniors too who played guitar, telling me oh you are just a bass player no big deal I could play bass no problem. Not sure what kind of music they listen to... (80's hair perhaps?)

Not sure who wrote that crap but I was in an 80's Hair band and my playing was very much up front in the mix. Tell me you did not hear the bass in every Bon Jovi song ever written stand out? Motley Crue What Nicky Sixx wasn't in the mix give me a break and don't let me get started when it comes to the Hair bands that came out of Japan like X-japan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTAC6...eature=related or Loudness

I think those are some pretty significant opening bass licks. But maybe it's just me. And yeah, Saints of Los Angeles is a newer Crue song, so here's some live for you.

Sixx is a bit hard to hear because Tommy Lee uses pretty big drums with a huge bass sound, but you just have to listen closely.

The entire "Too Fast For Love" album.

I love that album by the way. I wish they would remaster it with some bass.

A little low in the mix but not that you can't hear it at all? The first album is never in the hands of the band sorry to say, so a clean studio album with all the controls over you and your sound the record company can get away with is the results. Back when it was all about how close you could get the kick drum and the bass melted together to get the punch that was so require for the 80 music. But I saw them live back in 82 Nikki Sixx's bass sound was killer. I agree a re-mix would be nice but they would have to beg Elektra who owns the rights after they signed with them and dissolved their own label Leathür Records which the first 20,000 copies sold and they had Elektra knocking down their door. Later picked up by Warner Bros after jumping ship on Elektra who they owed albums to but, did them with Warner bros. I don't see Elektra giving up the rights after that unless it is for big money and the Crue were always about themselves not the fans so I sure they could care less

That album was mixed that way on purpose, cause Nikki Sixx wasn't a very good bassist early on. I read an interview a few years ago where the producer came right out and said that. By the time they got to Girls Girls Girls and Dr. Feelgood however, Sixx's chops had improved a lot and that's when they started pushing him up in the mix.

So yeah, they could re-mix and re-release Too Fast For Love but I'm not sure people would be real pleased with the results.

Like I said I seen him in 82 first album was 81 and his playing was tight so that is strange. other than partying all the time which is what they did that is maybe the reason for the comment. Either way he wrote 99% of the songs so the music was all him and so he had to be good I would think? the others did not start writing till 1990

Maybe Sixx was playing well live in the early 80s, but the producer said he struggled in the studio on their first couple of albums.

I've done both and they are totally different worlds. I can completely believe that could have been the case.

Nikki's not a particularly good bass player now. His forte is definitely songwriting ( That and coming back from the dead).

I think that album should be remixed with NEW bass lines.
