I shared these next few thoughts with Trey and his wife Sara in a PM. This is MY take on a certain philosophy that lives in Brazil (Brasil...they spell it). Many of these folks I've talked to seem to agree. They seem to feel that there is a VERY thin line between extreme happiness and extreme sadness. Years ago, about 40 to be close, I was listening to a street Samba. On the surface, it was pure energy, locked-in-time like a mother.....I could imagine beautiful, long legged, half naked Brazilian ladies, dressed in Carnival splendor Strutting their stuff down an old Rio street. But, I heard something kind of dark hiding down in the harmonies....almost a kind of sadness. Beautiful, of course but sad....even almost tragic.
Listen to some Ivan Lins stuff...he"s got this **** down pat.
It is most apparent in the Samba.
Yeah Mike.....Death. But as you say..."The promise of life".
One huge extreme to another. But ain't that what it's ALL really about?
Wow, man. That nails what I love about that music!

My soap box seems to be holding up pretty good.
Yeah, I did OK......but how WE did it is more important.
As Fab observed about this thread...it's been kind of like a bunch of jazzers improvising together and hanging out. Our OP, Flyman, started us out by pulling in some jazzers with the thread title. Thanks man....see what you started?
That brought some of us in who are interested in some common topics. As Fab said...one idea led to another and we fed off of each others experiences and knowledge.
No bull****, not a lot of ego-show, respect, and care.
Mike, you've helped by making some great points and by your keen interest. You fed me stuff, which in turn, helped me make some, hopefully, interesting points.
I got close to "nailing" as you say, some of my ideas about this music to a lady friend who was also a musician, a couple years back. Once in a while, though, in one of my tirades after listening to Ivan together, she would roll her eyes as if to say...."What the **** is he talking about?". A few weeks later she went, screaming, into the night.
Anyway, this is why I hang around here...hoping to get a shot at a REAL conversation with REAL nice folks.
Viva Brasil!

+1 Paul and everyone else. This has been great. It's what keeps me coming back.
