(10th Annual) Favorite Horror Movies Thread

Sign in to disble this ad
I do this every year around Halloween- it's a chance for new members to talk about their favorite horror flicks and old members to post about any new discoveries or old gems they've found.

Not a huge amount of good horrors came out this year, at least not that I've seen. Just saw "Stake Land" the other day and it was actually very enjoyable. It had a similar premise to Zombieland, but it wasn't comedic at all (and was about vampires). The second Human Centipede apparently just came out- the first one was better than I thought it would be, so I'll have to check that one out. They weren't exactly horrors, but Black Death and Troll Hunter were good and worth a watch. Scream 4 was good for what it was, but it's a pretty worn-out premise by now. Lots of remakes are due out- kind of scared to see what they're going to do with Evil Dead.

Dead Girl is really disturbing. Not sure if it fits into the horror genre, though.

For me, and keep in mind it's far from a favorite genre, but, for me, the original Nightmare on Elm Street rocked hard for a horror flick. The 1st remake of The Thing was top notch too. A couple that are a bit more obscure but were creepy or good for a scare were The Thir13en Ghosts and Silent Hill ( an adaptation from a game ).

That's all I got. As I said, not much into this genre.

Almost forgot I like Prince of Darkness too. It was odd, but creepy.

Prince of Darknesss - that's an older one right? Some bizarre story about messages from the future being sent back in time warning of satan ruling the planet etc etc. Freaky concept! I liked that movie a lot though I haven't seen it in like 10 years

The one that's got me hooked lately (though not a movie, more a series) is "The Walking Dead" I've been lovin' the hell out of that series lately! I just finished up watching season 1 and am anxiously awaiting season two. (Starts Sunday on AMC, check it out)

Haha you know what? I was gonna revive (!) the Walking Dead 2 thread by asking how you were getting on with series 1 after your impulsive box set purchase. Glad you weren't disappointed. As you will now understand, there are a lot of us eagerly awaiting Series 2.

As for great horror films this year? Nah, not really. Insidious was ok, Troll Hunter a good film, but not much in the way of scares.

I still maintain that the most disturbing film I've probably EVER seen is the psychological horror that is Martyrs. It's a tough, tough watch, but not in a 'Cannibal Holocaust' unnecessary gore overload type way.

This is true, and I have you to thank for it!

I watched the whole season in one night and had to fight the urge to cover my windows with blankets and shut off all the lights when going to bed! I have no idea why but they way they portrayed the "dead" really creeped me out. I don't get spooked very easily at all but this one was deliciously creepy!

Insidious... the demon thing was corny...sort of "Darth Maul's little brother" but I think that they put it together well. It was scary without having to resort to huge special effects and whatnot.

I think anyone reading this thread is anxious for the second season of Walking Dead

I'm still amazed they're doing a Martyrs remake. Then again, they remade Let The Right One In, and the remake was actually good- that rarely happens though.

Did you know that some of the cast of the Walking Dead are going to be at a comic/movie convention in NYC this weekend?
My wife and her sister are going there on Saturday to meet them, but I agreed to stay home and watch the young 'uns before I knew this key little fact...

It's not too late for you!! Go! Live life for me!

The Walking Dead is on Netflix direct to T.V. I might have to give it a watch.

Anxious indeed. It's going to be awesome.

Yes, 'Let Me In' was excellent. I thought it managed to maintain the overall uneasy spookiness of the original. A 'Martyrs' remake? Seriously? Wow.

Relic...I feel your fear I found myself nervously twitching at creepy noises at night for a few hours after watching each episode. Michael Rooker...ever seen him play a good guy?

I've always been an evil dead fan. I love that movie. Another great old one i really enjoy is Texas Chainsaw Massacre II. If you haven't seen that you gotta watch it.

"thats prime meat!"

" burn 'er like a rat! Burn 'er like a rat rat rat!"

"bubbas got a girlfriend"

"in coming mail!"

For you fans of the Walking Dead, who also happen to like Breaking Bad and caught the season finale... the scene near the end, Gus' demise, if you will, had the special effects done by the team who does the fx for Walking Dead.

A film that's new-ish, but I was pleasantly surprised by, was Pandorum.

Ok, it isn't an amazing film by any means, but I had heard so many bad reviews, I was quite surprised, and, IMO one of the better horror flicks of recent years.

(I REALLY don't dig the "it's like we shot this with a personal camcorder" look that seems to be becoming more popular).

They were actually filming a zombie movie not a mile from my house a couple months back. They closed off downtown at night for shooting, and they were taking a bunch of locals for zombie extras. I was too lazy to go for that, so not much chance of making it to NY
