I bet it would be easier for a black guy to become a NY Fireman than it would be for a white guy get on the Detroit city council.

I wonder.........lawsuit????? I sure could use the money.

Comparisons are moot. If discrimination is happening anywhere to anyone, it should be exposed and dealt with.

The city council is elected by the voters--are they who you're going to sue?
/irrelevant derail

I realized it as soon as it was posted but figured that I would leave it up just to see where it went.

Indeed I did. I also read your third sentence. And I thought it was misplaced...

My understanding to this situation is limited to what was in the link, but it looks like part of the problem is that blacks were, by design, discouraged from applying

The judge is catching some heat, as some question his impartiality:

The Detroit City Council may be an example of a racially biased electorate, but there is nothing inherent in the requirements for Detroit City Council which are racially biased.

From the article Phil posted on page 1:

Quote:
When the first EEOC charge was filed in 2002, New York City’s fire department was 2.9 percent Black. The numbers have not changed at all since then, despite the fact that the City has had five years to try to remedy the problem. As of March 2007, the FDNY included 335 Black firefighters out of a total of approximately 11,500 firefighters, still barely more than 2.9 percent. New York City as a whole, by comparison, is 27 percent Black.
OK, so someone is just lying here

Welcome to New York - where there are usually multiple sides to every story...and none of them is necessarily true...
