Austin Hatch, Michigan Wolverines recruit, in critical condition after plane crash - ESPN

To me, this story is incredible. He lost his mother and two siblings in a plane crash in 2003. Now, he lost his father and step mother in another plane crash Friday night.

If you don't read the article, both flights were private, not commercial.

The boy needs to take the hint that he's not meant to fly.

Really sad story, though

I don't think I've ever heard of anything that blows quite that hard.

Time to get a good, low mileage minivan that will go for miles and miles. Honda makes a good one that'll get you 200,000 miles easily.

Update on the story: Austin Hatch, Michigan basketball recruit, makes progress after surviving family's second fatal plane crash -- Outside the Lines - ESPN

Very moving article. I can't imagine what he must be going through, good thing for his support group.

Father was an experienced pilot but had the first accident that killed the wife and 2 children now this? Was he at fault?

That's so sad. I hope the kid makes it.

I know nothing about either accident but most accidents, and this is especially true of aircraft accidents, don't have sole causes - there's usually a chain of events that lead to an accident. However the NTSB generally primarily faults the pilot in command for most accidents. Even in the case of a crash that started with a mechanical failure it's normal for the NTSB to fault the pilot's handling of the emergency.

Personally, self recriminations would probably keep me out of the left seat if a plane I was piloting ever crashed and got people killed.
