2004 Beetle oil specs?

Sign in to disble this ad
I work at a lube shop, so I should know, right?

Anyways. Little sister has a 2004 beetle, 2.0 gas.

All the oil sites are saying it takes 5-40, 0-40, or 10-40 synthetic, which is typical of a newer german car.

It is hard to get a 5 or 0 40 at a decent price though.

I'm sure I could use Mobil-1 5-30 or equivalent, because since it is an american model, it probably only needs to meet the GF-4 spec.

Anyone got one of these? She doesnt have the owners manual and the dealership wont give me any real answers.

does it not specify the oil viscosity on both the fill cap and the owner's manual?

if it specs xw40, i definitely wouldn't use 30 weight since it's already 6 years old, unless it is very low miles and i wasn't driving much at all in the heat of the summer

just look for a sale at the auto parts chains and stock up when what it requires is on sale, you'll find the correct oil for probably less than you'll pay for the lighter viscosity at regular price
