Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys.

This thread is dedicated to movies released or to be released in 2009. List, if you will, movies you've seen, which disappointed you, or were absolutely great, and movies you haven't seen (or haven't been released yet) which you're anticipating, or can't believe they actually made.

Disappointments:
Wolverine
Transformers 2
Harry Potter
Nick And Nora's Infinite Playlist

Great Ones:
Star Trek
Coraline
Monsters VS Aliens

Anticipations:
Astroboy
Zombieland
The Men Who Stare At Goats
Avatar (Could be 2010)

Facepalms:
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs
Any Tyler Perry Movie
Any Michael Moore Movie
Any Seth Rogen Movie
Any Movie With The Fat Kid From Drillbit Taylor or Superbad

There's more of each, but I forget all the garbage that was put out this year.

only one ive seen in the theater was bruno, and that was good but not great.

im really looking forward to zombieland (love me some zombie movies) and the invention of lying.

the hype and previews for 2012 make it look like garbage. i checked it out on imdb expecting michael bay to be involved, but i guess making 99% computer animated crap doesnt always require his involvement.

there have definitely been some good ones im sure ive missed.

I actually though that wolverine was quite good, not amazing, but enjoyed it as much as any other of the X-Men films.

Bruno sucked. Flat out. That man's Ali G characters CANNOT carry an entire movie, in my opinion.

Funny People didn't live up to it's namesake.

Watchmen, though not a complete failure as a movie, was a failure at being a reasonably good adaptation of the book. But then, being a fanboy, wanting it to succeed would be like betting on a horse with two broken legs... that's been shot full of sedatives...

Also, Extract was significantly less funny than I'd have liked it to be. I think the only time I really laughed was at David Koechner and Mike Judge's cameo.

Inglorious Basterds was loads of fun. Loved that flick. Also, I was surprised by Observe and Report, but then I like dark comedy.

Can't wait to see the Wolfman, but the continual set-backs do not bode well.

I think the only movie I've sen at the theater this year is Star Trek. I've been a fan since I was a lad, and this was the best Star Trek movie ever!!

(Did I just quote Kanye West?)

Great:
Perscription for Meloncholy - Really endearing love story!
[Rec] - Think Blair Witch/Cloverfield first person horror/thriller, but actually GOOD.
The Bridge - Doccumentary about people killing themselves by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Very powerfull.
Man on a Wire - Doccumentary about the Frenchman that rigged a tightrope between the Twin Towers (RIP) in the 70's. AMAZINGLY done and very entertaining.

Dissapointments:
Inglorious Basterds - I 'liked' it. I expected more though. I like Terrentino's dialogue a lot and the movie didn't have much. Needless to say, my two favorite scenes were the one in the French house in the begining and the one in the bar.
Nick and Nora's Infinite Capitalization on 'alt' Culture - This movie sucked. My girlfriend made me go see it. It was just a watered down version of the hipster culture, but about a year and a half behind what was actually 'hip'.
Ponyo - Also, i liked it. But it's probably my least favorite Miyazaki movie. Nausicaa is still #1
Synecdoche, New York - built up for me way too much. Just a boring, depressing film with 'indy cred' cast.
Sunshine Cleaning - I seriously hate these 'yah we're mainstream but we're still indy' movies (see: Juno, Lil' Miss Sunshine etc etc). This movie was crap.

Anticipations:
Fantastic Mr Fox - I like Wes Anderson and i LOVE Roald Dhal's books. It's in stop motion, and looks rad.
Extract - We'll see if Mike Judge still 'has it'.
The Road - I love Cormac McCarthy's book a LOT. By far one of my favorite contemporary novels. I will rage so hard if Hollywood botches it...

Face Palms:
Bruno - I dunno. it was really lame. I had never seen any Ali G film before, but it was just a lot of racist and homophobic based comedy.
The Hangover - Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb. Saw it with some friends. The only part i thought was funny was the pic at the end of Zach Galifawhatshisname getting the beejer and hearing all the 'bros' in the theatre go 'ewwwwwww'.
Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince - I don't read the HP books. The movie was entertaining... but seriously... my sister dragged me there on opening night and all the repressed sexual whooping and hollering directed at Harry, Hermione, and Luna was a but much...

I actually liked Wolverine as I was expecting it to be total crap. I enjoyed Blob & Sabertooth backstories. Great it was not, but I enjoyed it. I liked Ponyo, but wished it were better, still a good movie.

Come to think of it, I think this is the only movie I've seen in the theater this year and I saw it twice, not due to any great desire on my part, it just worked out that way. Still, a very entertaining movie IMO.

I just saw a trailer for "The Men Who Stare at Goats" and I'll probably end up seeing that. No other movies have interested me enough to bother this year.

Good/Great
-Wolverine: An all-around fun movie with some cool plot.

-Watchmen: F'ing fantastic. It'll be a while before I see a movie as good as this one.

-Inglorious Basterds: another fun film, not fanstastic, but the numerous plot twists at the end made it a cool movie for me.

meh/Exceptionally Horrible
Harry Potter 6: this was just flat out pathetic. Every scene was COMPLETELY disconnected from the previous one, the shakespearian love triangles were blown WAY out of proportion, and as usual, the guy who plays Dumbledore was excruciatingly bad. It's like the director picked out the one guy who would be the least accurate representation of Albus. There was absolutely nothing redeeming about this, JK Rowling should sue for damages to her reputation.

I think those are the only movies I saw this year.
