So as 2010 approaches I'm left wondering (and feeling pretty dumb) as to whether or not we are ending a decade,...or beginning a new one.
I feel like we are ending the 1st decade of the 2000's but some folks are claiming it's the beginning of the 2nd decade. Before I go correcting them I was hoping that someone smarter than I would confirm my correctness or lack thereof.

The decade ends in nine hours and 21 minutes here where I live.

The decade goes ***1 ***2 ***3 ***4 ***5 ***6 ***7 ***8 ***9 ***0.
The next decade starts again with ***1.
Just the same as the year 2000 is the ending year of the last century, and the ending year of the last millenium. |

Looking at like this:
2000-01 = 1st year year of the new decade
01-02 =2nd years
so on and so forth....
09-10 = Tenth years
10-11 1st year of the new decade. |

2000= 1st year
2001= 2nd year
so on and so forth...
2009 = 10th year

Like when you were born, you weren't 1 to start, you achieved it.
So 2009 is the END of this decade.

Liquor store clerk: This ID says you are 20.
Me: Well not really, this is currently the 21st year I have been alive. So I'm actually 21 right now.
Liquor store clerk: Nice try.

Right now we are in the 3rd millenium, the 21st century, the 201st decade (9years into this decade), the 2009th year, the 24108th month (december), the 733335th day.
We need to complete 2010 to complete the 201st decade.
(anno 31st december 2009)
Happy newyear.
And not happy new decade. |

someone get a lawyer on this.

-Mike | Nice attempt, just faulty logic.
Being in your 21st year does not equate to having lived for 21+ years.

So 2009 is the END of this decade. | So you see it as there is a zeroist year?
I imagine it started with the first year. |

I imagine it started with the first year. | Earlier societies of humans spoke of dates in terms of "in the 20th year of....." and so on. I think it wasn't until much later that people started saying time by year, such as "in 2009".

Here it is Dobbel Palm.
It just past midnight, and I'm sitting home with rheumatism.
Happy new year.
If we apply the century and millenium logic like what was a topic 10 years ago, technicly the next decade, the 210th decade starts on 1 january 2011.
Whatever.
Have fun. |

Being in the year 2009 doesn't mean 2009 years have passed.
Being in the year 2010 doesn't mean 2010 years have passed.
Being in the year 2010 means that 2009 years have passed, and that the 2010th still needs to pass.
It means that the 201st decade still needs to pass.
I'm just in it to give you guys a headache.
It worked for me though. |

So, did it just go from 1 BC to 1 AD?
