2010 Beginning or End of a Decade?

So as 2010 approaches I'm left wondering (and feeling pretty dumb) as to whether or not we are ending a decade,...or beginning a new one.

I feel like we are ending the 1st decade of the 2000's but some folks are claiming it's the beginning of the 2nd decade. Before I go correcting them I was hoping that someone smarter than I would confirm my correctness or lack thereof.

2009 is the end, 2010 is beginning is how I look at it.

The decade ends in nine hours and 21 minutes here where I live.

It would be both, no? Midnite tonite being the end of 2009 (first decade) and the beginning of 2010 (second decade).

Technicly 2010 is the ending year of the decade.
The decade goes ***1 ***2 ***3 ***4 ***5 ***6 ***7 ***8 ***9 ***0.
The next decade starts again with ***1.

Just the same as the year 2000 is the ending year of the last century, and the ending year of the last millenium.

Forgive me I've been up since 3am PST. I guess I'm just wierded out with the whole end = beginning thing.

Looking at like this:

2000-01 = 1st year year of the new decade
01-02 =2nd years
so on and so forth....
09-10 = Tenth years

10-11 1st year of the new decade.

Do it this way, and it comes out fine....

2000= 1st year
2001= 2nd year
so on and so forth...
2009 = 10th year

Time didn't start with year 1. It started with 0. The 1 is the completion of the first year. Same applies from there on forth, way I see it.

Like when you were born, you weren't 1 to start, you achieved it.

So 2009 is the END of this decade.

I tried this when I was 15 to get a drivers license, and again at 20 to get beer. It didn't work either times.

I love being anal about this, but I do not care how anyone calls it.

Right now we are in the 3rd millenium, the 21st century, the 201st decade (9years into this decade), the 2009th year, the 24108th month (december), the 733335th day.

We need to complete 2010 to complete the 201st decade.

(anno 31st december 2009)

Being in your 21st year does not equate to having lived for 21+ years.

Earlier societies of humans spoke of dates in terms of "in the 20th year of....." and so on. I think it wasn't until much later that people started saying time by year, such as "in 2009".

If we apply the century and millenium logic like what was a topic 10 years ago, technicly the next decade, the 210th decade starts on 1 january 2011.

That's the right logic.

Being in the year 2009 doesn't mean 2009 years have passed.
Being in the year 2010 doesn't mean 2010 years have passed.

Being in the year 2010 means that 2009 years have passed, and that the 2010th still needs to pass.
It means that the 201st decade still needs to pass.



I'm just in it to give you guys a headache.

It is, but now Ive perplexed myself. So, is there a Year 0 or not? We all know the Earth has been around for more than 2010 years...
