They full well knew that they would be asking for 25% of those contracts back. To me that's pure BS. If they signed those contracts, honor them. That's the players' big sticking point right now.
I think the players see it right. The system needs fixing big time and the owners' method of just asking for concessions from the players time after time after time just doesn't fix it.

The players who signed those late contracts knew this just as well as the owners did. It's a wash.

In any case, can the owners seriously keep a league afloat if they keep signing these ridiculous contracts and then expect the players to give back ever 7 or 8 years? How would you like it if your boss did that to you?

If some of the idiot owners in this league didn't do the things they do, they wouldn't have these problems. So I agree with the notion that they've created this mess themselves. (keep in mind, however, it's not all the owners that do these moronic things. I could go on a rant about this, but I won't).
The players need to understand that the NHL is notorious for not wanting someone else to tell them how to run their business, which is their prerogative. They're the ones taking the risk, the players aren't. If the players continue to play hardball, they will lose eventully. They need to remember the sentiment that is taught to them when they're kids playing minor hockey: the logo on the front of the jersey is bigger than the name on the back. They think they are the product, but they aren't. They're only part of the product.

| | | | I'll only believe that progress is made if and when agreements are signed.
Until then, it's purely speculation.

-Mike | I've heard arguments that Snyder's 'shenanigans' are part of the reason the league is in the situation it's in. I'm not familiar enough with Philly's business patterns to know how accurate that is.

The big market teams would stand to benefit the most from big concessions from the players. Now that it's obvious this isn't going to heppen, at least not without at least losing more than one full season, there's diminishing returns. So big owners are turning to get it over with and let's play and start making money again. The cash machine needs to start making them money again.
I really don't care at this point... I WANT MY HOCKEY BACK

| | | No hockey this season. I made that prediction a while ago.
Too many egos and money at play. The players are unwilling to budge if only a little.
Good thing NHL 13 is fun to play.

Interrupted the thing and then still managed to get Buttman to speak with him for a few secs afterwards. Guy is from my hometown! Priceless! http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-pu...3751--nhl.html
