I feel that one day my own kids could be the subject to bullying. It does teach you to defend yourself in all imaginable ways, including making as many friends as you can and learning to fight back but some kids just can't: http://www.comcast.net/articles/news...ying.One.Town/
One was bullied for being a foreigner and having an accent (her bullies even walked to her casket to laugh at her), one for being gay, one for having learning disabilities, one for wearing pink (?)
I was bullied for a while for different reasons, and it stopped when I suddenly grew up, ending up taller and stronger than most of them, so basically the day I sent one to the hospital (which was not too smart, by the way) it was the end of it.
One day some dude I was working with during the summer asked me if I remembered him. Turned out he was a kid who used to bully me. As he had matured, he realized he did something wrong and actually apologized.
People can have a mean streak but kids are more likely to hurt others for fun and don't get why it's not proper.
What's missing there? Are things getting worse? Or are the media just reporting it more than usual? Just a society getting more violent, parents not doing the job they're supposed to, same with their teachers?

But it's some ****. I think kids are probably going to get more violent as their numbers increase.
What can be done? |

When my boy was being bullied in grade school I informed the teacher after class one day, with my son at my side, that he (pointing at my son) was going to flatten the nose of the bully, really hurt him, next time he got on him---it was necessary because she (the teacher) could not control the situation.
We then marched down to the principal's office and I told him the same thing in no uncertain terms. No debating, no lets be reasonable crap. No waiting for my son to be hurt first before he defends himself.
They did not take it seriously enough I guess. My boy knocked the f outta the kid not 2 days later. That ended the bully's career completely in case my son came after him for bullying someone else as well. Definitely put the kid's mind straight as to consequences for behavior.
My boy had always been able to defend himself, but the "lets not fight or you'll get in trouble" thing kept him, in his lil mind, defenseless. I gave him permission to protect himself and he's never looked back.
He has grown up and possesses a very active black belt in American Open Style karate, and can be, if he wants, very dangerous to any attacker. I think he's kicked ass on someone only twice since, in absolute defense, but certainly ended the BS real quickly. He don't dance. But he's a heck of a nice guy.

Apparently I knocked the crap out of him after I told him to leave me alone and he didn't. From then on I've never been bullied - although I never really saw that as being bullied back then anyways. As they say, kids will be kids.
I don't know what the answer is or why kids feel the need to bully other kids. I would say the 'victims' (for lack of a better term) need to learn to stand up for themselves more - and in this day in age standing up for yourself definitely seems to be looked down on. |

Suzana Vidovic found her sister's body hanging over the front lawn. The family watched, she said, as the girls who had tormented Sladjana for months walked up to the casket — and laughed.
"They were laughing at the way she looked," Suzana says, crying. "Even though she died."

No, bullying isn't getting worse, we're just noticing it more. Media coverage is not indicative of frequency or volume; the murder rate has been going down since the 90s but Americans think it's gone up because of all the news stories. |

The first one spit on the back of my jacket as he sped by and I could hear the 2nd one laughing as he came up at speed to take his turn.
The sound of his approaching laughter allowed me to do a perfect two-handed text book back-swing which caught him square in the face HARD as he sailed by. He crashed his bicycle and got marked up pretty good then started wailing like a child experiencing his first fall.
His friend stopped, looked back, and then started swearing & making loud threats. Without saying a word I dropped my books, stared at him, and with my hands cupped upwards at my sides, gave him the 'bring it on' signal.
I was scarred. Both of these guys were the gym teachers pets and the school's star athletes. Either one of them could have torn me apart with ease but I had had enough.
After that NO ONE bothered me at that school again. Lesson learned? If you aren't tough, be unpredictable... |

You know, people that are only friends with a certain group, etc?

And the hot chicks all look in their early twenties, with huge knockers and a ton of makeup.
The jocks wear the same jackets with the same big letter on it, have impeccable hairdos, all look buff and straight of the pages of GQ.
The geeks all have huge retainers, glasses taped together and carry "The Book Of UNIX".
The jocks beat up the geeks for the entertainment of the hot chicks.
It's a bit like that. Seriously, no bullying in Brazil?

And I must confess I bullied a kid in my class. Nothing harsh, he just had this long curly black hair dipped in hairspray and I used to call him Wet Dog if he spoke something useless at class.
Looked a bit like this:
Be aware that classes in Brazil are quite liberal, most of the teachers have great senses of humour and are kinda like our friends.
They even let us talk when they're writing stuff on the whiteboard. That kind of friendship in class amenized the exclusiveness of students (there really aren't groups of popular/hipster/nerd people here) and made trolling in classes a thing of the past.

| | Looking for Opportunities to Create Harmony | | Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Vancouver, BC Canada | | As a teacher, I see bullying often. It has always been a big problem and I don't believe its getting worse, its just not being tolerated anymore. No more of this 'boys will be boys' crap.
In British Columbia (perhaps all of Canada?) every teacher and student participates in pink t-shirt Day. It started because one boy who wore pink got bullied because of it: Quote:
The last Wednesday of February is known as Anti-Bullying Day in Canada. It's also known as "Pink Shirt Day". Originally started as a protest against a bullying incident at a Nova Scotia high school (Central Kings Rural High School). On this day participants are asked to wear pink to symbolize a stand against bullying. [1]
The original event was organized by David Shepherd and Travis Price. They bought and distributed 50 pink shirts after a student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school.[2]
In 2008, Premier of British Columbia, Gordon Campbell proclaimed February 27 to be the provincial anti-bullying day.[3] It was then celebrated on February 25 in 2009. In 2009, the boys and girls club work on pink T-shirts that saids "Bullying Stops Here." and "Pink Shirt Day" for Anti-Bullying Day
|
My own story happened in High School where two guys kept taunting me and threatening me. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. I grabbed one of the shop tools and went psycho on them, yelling at them to leave me alone with a crazy look on my face. Probably not the smartest thing to (I really didnt care about the consequences at that moment), but they never bothered me again, but I was labelled a racist by their crowd after that because the bully's happened to have brown skin and I don't.

I am a rugby fan and wear rugby jerseys often.
One day I came to work wear the rugby jersey of the Paris team. They wear pink so that their opponents think of them as wimps and then proceed to woop them.
That was the one on the right:
I only wore this jersey once. They never stopped for 6 months. Grown men. Unbelieveable.
"When do you wear your GAY shirt again?"
Ok, it does look a bit gay

All of you who say it stopped when you started a fight, just a heads up... doesn't always work. One day I was riding my bike home (8th grade I think?). Three popular hockey players were walking on the sidewalk in front of me. As I passed one of them kicked my bike to try to get me to fall off. I rode another 10 feet, hopped off my bike and turned back. I punched the one who kicked my bike in the stomach. I threw him on the ground and kicked him two or three times. I just turned around and picked up my bike and kept riding.
The next day he convinced all of his friends that I didn't fight fair and that I was therefor a "fag". The name calling just got worse. The thing is, names never bugged me. I've been a pretty fat kid for as long as I can remember, so I just became a witty *******.
Bullying is a legitimate problem though. A lot of kids don't have the emotional strength and stability that I did, and it's led to far too many suicides and ruined lives.

Kids are horrible to each other in middle school, always have been. Sometimes it's worse than others. High school's better, i was a emo hipster who wore size 0 pants with rainbow shirts, never bullied, barely teased.
As far as the laughing at the coffin, i'm ashamed to be a human. Some people deserve to be removed from society. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
