4 weeks in Florence/Darlington,SC. What to do?

Sign in to disble this ad
Yet another one of these kinds posts. Visiting my dad next week for a month and do not know what there is to do there. I don't know anyone there or any places, so all recommendations are welcome. Went visit him last year for 3 weeks and was positively dying of boredom. I'm 21 and should have my liscence in two weeks. If any one in the area or like even in myrtle beach, i visited last year when he lived there, wants to get together, grab a drink, or show me around, i'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Not much is the answer....I'm in Columbia which is about an hour a way. Your going to be in the country of South Carolina. There is not much city around darlington. Apple Annie's is a good music venue in Florence. I think your best bet if you have a car is Myrtle beach. House of blues is a great venue there. Not much going on in Columbia as far as major events.

My other advice is to make sure you have gas in the car and a good cd collection. Ride around the country side with the windows rolled down and enjoy the serenity.

Check out the Columbia free times on the internet, they have listings of upcoming shows in the area. If you feel like getting up to Columbia shoot me a PM. I'm close to your age we should have something in common, oh wait we already do...Bass

I used to play a gig in Florence every 6 weeks with my last band...

...you're going to be there for a month?

I'm sorry...

Years ago, I spent quite a bit of time in Florence. Unfortunately, we broke up and I haven't talked to her since.

I ate at a Burger King there once while passing through on I-95 on a road trip.

So, yeah, there's that.

I lived in SC for a while, and outside of Charleston, Greenville or Myrtle Beach, there's nothing going on.

I do hope you are prepared for a pm . Appreciate man. Not knowing anyone sucks. Also thought about heading to myrtle beach, maybe charlotte.
The scenery is quite gorgeous, so the cruising windows down maybe another option.

Any other local tbers around there?

Go to the Darlington Raceway Museum?

Myrtle and Columbia are not far and are really your best bets for shows and the like. As joey said, go to www.free-times.com to get an events calendar. Five Points and the Vista in Columbia are decent bar districts, but wouldnt be much fun soloing. Live music scene is surprisingly not as good as it should be for a college town; new brookland tavern is probably the best bet. Its a dive Ive played in a few times, but a loveable, small, dark, smelly, dank of a dive. Music scene used to be far better here in the 80s and 90s, somehow it dried up when Hootie got big.

I honestly don't remember the surroundings. It was off one of the highway exits in Florence. I was only there for about 20 min on my journey from Gainesville, FL to NYC in under 24 hours.

Yep. I used to play down that way a lot. Sorry to say it's kinda the armpit of the area. Myrtle Beach is nice, as is Wilmington, NC (college town with MANY babes and a not-so-bad music scene). I hate Charlotte, but that's just me. The whole area nort/northeast of Darlington is kind of NC's armpit as well. Fayetteville, Rockingham, etc. are no fun. I think if you stick to the coast you should be OK. Best of luck. Try to find some stuff you and Dad can do together. Time passes quickly my friend. Enjoy him while you have him. Cheers.
