Question 5 Things You Never Knew Your Cell Phone Could Do

Sign in to disble this ad
Got the following in an email from a buddy of mine. He's one of those "pass this email on" type of guys. You the know the ones I'm talking about.

Can anyone confirm this or is it mostly BS.
I'm mostly interested in the second one. Smells like BS to me.

5 Things You Never Knew Your Cell Phone Could Do

For all the folks with cell phones. (This should be printed and kept in your car, purse, and wallet. Good information to have with you.)

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave
emergencies.

Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency
tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST
Emergency

The Emergency Number world wide for Mobile is 112. If you find
Yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an
Emergency,
dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to
Establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly, this number 112
can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND
Have you locked your keys in the car?

Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy
someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys
In the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on
their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell
phone about a foot
From your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock
button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will
unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no
object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has
the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked
Our car over a cell
phone!'

THIRD
Hidden Battery Power

Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the
keys *3370#. Your cell phone will restart with this reserve and the instrument
will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you
charge your cell phone next time.

FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following
Digits on your phone: *#06#. A 15-digit code will appear on the
screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep
it
somewhere safe.

When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider
and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset
so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally
useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know

that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there

would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

And Finally....

FIFTH
Free Directory Service for Cells

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for
411 i nformation calls when they don't have to.. Most of us do not
carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation
even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information

option, simply dial: (800)FREE411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring
any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now.

So sick of email forwarding. it's very annoying. I don't mean like funny pictures or something about friends/family, that's fine. But these "10 things you didn't know" and more so political crap.

I think i pissed off my friends gf by replying to couple of them going "stop sending me this... crap because i am loosing braincells reading it..." when i got email forward from her. One was about Mexicans and how all Mexicans smuggle drugs into our country Other about Christmas tree and how "its not Arab tree, it's not Hanukkah tree, its Christmas tree" and everyone should be celebrating it, etc etc etc... I went off on that too, problem is, i pressed reply all and her parents got it too and of her dumb/racist family. they don't talk to me much anymore... Good... Less racist idiots i have to hangout with.

Don't know, but usually these mass-forwarding is either bigotry or just dumb false info. Either way it does more harm then anything.

Almost every forwarded email falls into one of these categories:

- Political extremism
- Religious extremism
- Sophomoric (at best) humor
- Scams
- Rumors that should have been researched and debunked before being forwarded

It's just the latest version of the "death Corvette" story.

Yeah, that's pretty much him in a nutshell. At least he doesn't send me those "pass this on or bad things will happen" emails. Or the save this sick person/pet by passing on this email to 10 people. That's my brothers job.

I sent out this responds to those:

A touching elephant story

While on holiday in Kenya and walking through the bush a man comes across an elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seems distressed so the man approaches very carefully. He gets down on one knee and inspects the bottom of the elephant's foot only to find a large thorn deeply embedded. As carefully and as gently as he can he removes the thorn and the elephant gingerly puts its foot down. The elephant turns to face the man and with a rather stern look on its face, stares at him. For a good ten minutes the man stands frozen - thinking of nothing else but being trampled.

Eventually the elephant turns and walks away.

For years after, the man often remembers and ponders the events of that day. Years later the man is walking through the zoo with his son. As they approach the elephant enclosure, one of the elephants turns and walks over to where they are standing at the rail. It stares at him and the man can't help wondering if this is the same elephant. The man climbs tentatively over the railing and makes his way into the enclosure. He walks right up to the elephant and stares back in wonder. Suddenly the elephant wraps its trunk around one of the man's legs and swings him wildly back and forth along the railing, instantly killing him.

Probably not the same elephant then.

NOW STOP SENDING ME THOSE BS EMAILS!!!

Actually, as long as your cell can 'see' a tower, 911 WILL work on a US cellphone, even if you don't have a 'working' phone or time on a prepaid.

I still hate forwarded spam.

Very true.

One former co-worker used to send this stuff all the time. I kept sending him the appropriate snopes.com link in reply. Finally, I sent him the snopes link and a message that was something like, "Look, … , this stuff is bogus. Here are some clues to it being fake. Notice that it says 'Springfield Police Department' but doesn't say what state, and the PD's supposed phone number has no area code. There are dates mentioned with no year. The supposed photo of the missing child is originally from a Sears catalog. These all shout 'FAKE!'"

His reply was, "Sorry, I just figure you can't be too careful." So I wrote back "Yes, you can be too careful." He finally caught on.

Man, I'm keeping that elephant story just for that purpose that Chunk-O-Funk suggested. That's beautiful.
