I think she could do it. She's been saying she wants to for a year or so, & a close friend is the/my WORLD'S greatest instructor. Anybody here ever been fool enough to buy a small child -GASP- drums?

I say let her go for it - music is for everyone, whether they want to play drums, bass, cello, piano whatever, support it I know if I had kids I'd do the same thing. I wish I had been into music earlier on in life, it would have changed everything haha.

Besides, drums are fun

I let my 2 year old play along on Rock Band. She plays to the beat, but not the right notes. She's definitely getting a USA Custom Gretsch kit when she turns 3.

On a serious note, I'll probably get a cheap e-kit on ebay when the time comes. You can keep the volume manageable for the kid and I can use it to lay down some drum tracks to play along with. Everyone wins.

Don't forget the headphones my cousin has an e-kit and it's AWESOME. First drum kit I'd ever played (last night ) and I loved it. Will definitely get one in the future.

In my non-parent opinion, when a child expresses an interest in a creative pursuit at a very young age I say run with it!

Once self-motivation is inspired into motion it's hard to stop.

I've lost count of the number of interviews with big time players which typically began with "Well I started playing ________ at age five..." (or younger).

Some of these are:

- surprisingly affordable
- their volume can be controlled (I'd avoid headphones to avert hearing damage and to also remain a participant in the child's progress)
- and they can do double duty in home recording projects.

Digital drum kits reviews

Perhaps seeking advice from a leading drum forum would be helpful...

Starting off your kids young musically is an excellent idea - majority of a person's brain development happens within their first 6-7 years. Get her a musical ear now, and if she likes it/sticks with it by the time she's an adult she'll be an amazing musician.

You might have to put up with some years of horrible noise first though.

Get a solid electric drumset or risk insanity.

To clarify- I fully endorse Sophia rocking the drums- what's more, mom(read *The Queen/ A-1 breadwinner of the 'steban estate* )has stated publicly that this one will recieve drum set for Christmas this year. My purpose in this thread is finding specific brands that are not crap.

At the publicly-stated age of 19 I pray to GOD you are not speaking from experience, my man.
Responding more on-topic, elecrto-drums suck the life from drumming, IME.

Lol, I am actually. My dad bought a drumset on a whim for a band that I didn't even really want to be in and every chance my brother got he would mess around on it. It was torture. Probably the worst punishment, intentional or otherwise, that I've ever gotten. Maybe if he was any good my skull wouldn't have split open every time he picked up the sticks but I know for sure that I would never EVER willingly be around a beginning drummer with an acoustic kit. Perhaps it's different when the subject is your kid? Don't get me wrong, I fully encourage getting your kid involved in something cool (art, music, sports, stock trading, etc) at a young age but drums... are honestly the most annoying instrument in the world when the person behind them has no idea what they're doing; and yes that statement includes the vuvuzela, lol !

I actually like the idea of electric kits a lot. I'm no drummer but I love the idea of having all kinds of different sounds available to you and the push of a button. Recently, I've heard a lot of software drums and electric drum kits that sound incredible too. I myself plan on getting my keyboard drumming skills to a respectable level with Addictive Drums

Right on, Kwes- I will take it all into acct.
On that note, having just recently passed 10 years of staying-at-home-dadding, I am confident in saying that I am very well capable of ignoring some pretty obnoxious noise at this point.

Haha, then go for the acoustic kit. I can only hope I have anywhere near that level of tolerance when I have children .

And just a little proof that sampled drums can sound quite awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv8ev...layer_embedded After listening to this track for almost a week straight I still find it difficult to believe that this wasn't some guy on a traditional kit tearin' it up .

read *I'M ALREADY DEAFER THAN THAN ****

Oh, I know electric drums can be very convincing, and I'm not ruling them out. The noise level would not likely be the deciding factor, though.
Appreciating all comments, too- I'm sure others will benefit from this discussion.

I got my kids a set. I went with the Pearl Rhythm Traveler because it's a little smaller and takes up less space but it's a real kit, not a toy. Cymbals and heads not so hot but some drummer buddies have donated their discards so I'm in good shape.

Sometimes they play a lot and sometimes go for long periods without touching it, but it's there if they want to play, along with guitars, basses and keyboard. Plus it's there when my friends want to practice at my house and no one has to carry a drum set. My wife still chuckles when I tell people I got it "for the kids".

In retrospect, I might have gone with a used electric set. I like the electric sets (can you say volume knob and headphones?). They also have lots of cool percussion sounds. But they come with there own set of problems when they start to wear out.

Personally, I like the sound of my kids experimenting with music. One likes the drums, one plays guitar and bass and one doesn't play much at all so I put colored stickers on the keyboard and tell him which color to hit. Then we funk out We might be the next Partridge family.

I bought this to my 5 year old son http://drums-percussion.musiciansfri...ku=500744#used, very nice drum set, cymbals are not good but drums are, I replaced the kick drum pedal for a used yahama that I bought in GC, my son took some lessons last spring, now he is asking to re start taking lessons.
