Yup, there's nothing like loading up 10 plates and watching that bar bend.

Just wanted to brag a tad.

I know that feeling. I was in the gym at school and squatted 440lbs, and I felt pretty cool.

Yeah, I have a 475 squat and anything above 3 plates (per side) gives the bar a nice bend in it when it's on your back.

Depends on the bar really, some of the Eleiko one's we have start to bend with two plates.

Well, with two 20Kg (44lb) plates, generally more interested in the 25/55's tho.

Nice lifts tho, but the type of lifting i'm interested in is getting that weight over your head

That put's thing's in perspective! I think the most I ever cleaned and jerked (I just don't like the way that sounds) was 245 lbs.

BTW, I used to be in the 500lbs. deadlift club too. I got up to 515 at one time. Now that I am really, really middle aged, I keep it pretty light. Heavy weight is too hard on your joints after a certain point in life.

Yes, you have to take care of the body. Amazing how the muscles mature, though.

If you keep at it, it's amazing what your body can do. My godfathers old training buddy never stopped hitting the gym regularly. He's in his late 60's/early 70's and still squatting in the 500lbs (for reps)

DIfferent people, different bodies, I'm pretty sure lighter weights make more sense for me.

To explain further, I have had a bad back ever since I was run over by a car while riding my motorcycle when I was seventeen. Weightlifting actually gave me back alot of strength, and kept my back pain under control, however, at my age, over excercise can be just as damaging as too little excercise. The trick is to know when enough is enough.

Man am I glad you started this thread! I've this jar of peanut butter that for the life of me I can't open. Think one of you guys could come over and open it?

Seriously, that is a impressive number. After two blown shoulders, a couple discs in my neck and a torn up knee, I'm squarely in Dr Cheeses camp nowadays. I do miss those low rep high weight days in the gym. Now its 3 sets of ten and off to the stationary bike.

Ah well. Age has its priviledges I guess.

You can still lift heavy weights if you don't mind not being able to get off the couch, carry your groceries, or play with your kids or grandkids.

Most folks my age would rather have good functional strength and mobility than simply impress folks in the gym.

I know you're joking, but opening jars is mainly forearm strength. Those are muscles you can train almost daily without stressing them.

I lifted weights on Saturday.

Well, not on purpose. My buddy left them in front of his liquor cabinet.
