If he didn't know the balloon, didn't know how long he'd be up there, thought he could land safely (water below?) I don't find it implausible that he jumped. Unlikely, but plausible.

1. He is still at home, either at a friends, or run away, wtc.
2. He is on the ground, but not in a safe sense..
He cant be found at home, but he was seen getting on the balloon. Yet, he isnt on the balloon as it lands.

And what the F*** are the parents doing bulding experimental baloons?! Especially around pre-adolescent children!?
