66 Years Ago Today...

As I'm sure you all know, today's date is one of the most significant in the history of Europe, and even the world. Starting just before 6am, all along the coast of Normandy, and even earlier inland, men from Britain, the US, Canada, Poland and Free France landed in Nazi held territory as the beginning of the liberation of Europe: Operation Overlord.

Thanks to the immense acheivement of those men, not only on the beaches, but in the planning rooms and for the subsequent months, Nazi Germany was brought to its knees, and Western Europe was freed. Without the sacrifice on the beaches and in the fields of Normandy, today's World would be very different.

Salute for those that fell in the battlefields of WWII, whether they were German, American or Polish.

So many wasted lives for nothing.

Not to mention those from the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zeland, the Netherlands etc.

Can't even begin to imagine what those conditions were like. True sacrifice for freedom.

Much respect.

Nor should we forget those who fought and died on the Eastern front. Soviet casualties in WW2 were huge.

The following data are country, total military and civilian deaths, and these deaths as a percentage of the 1939 population:

UK - 449,800 (0.94%)
USA - 418,500 (0.32%)
USSR - 23,954,000 (14.18%)

Too true. Though it must be said, how many soviets were lost at the hands of their own superiors? (but that is a question for another day).

Big salute to our troops, both those who fought 66 years ago and those fighting today.

My father got an all expense paid trip to Europe for a couple of years back in the 40's. The old fart had stones.

My dad was there, too. He didn't talk much about it, though. When the subject came up he would get that "1000 yard stare" and chill out for a while. The few things I heard him talk about were strange and interesting.

Mine too. In the '80's my brother and I tried to get him to go to Europe with us to see where he had been, and he would change the subject every time. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Let's also not forget that the Soviets would kill their own people for retreating, and would give 2 men 1 rifle and 1 spare magazine.

The beginning of the movie "Enemy At The Gates" graphically shows this.

For NOTHING? Now I have read some very ignorant statements on here....mostly about bass which is somehow very irrelevant compared to this topic.....

These brave Allied troops, PAID a sacrifice you cannot even fathom. for NOTHING you say....

These gallant young soldiers gave their lives, to liberate W.Europe from Hitler's grasp. They freed countries, liberated Auschwitz and other death camps......freed captive people.

Nothing you say? This type of stupidity and ignorance is WHY history is bound to repeat itself. I have NOTHING else to say to you sir.

Have to admit, I missed that part of your post. My internal crap filters must have been working more than usual.

If it wasn't for the sacrifices made, Europe (and god only knows where else) would have been completelly run under a facist regime. But yeah. Nothing.
