If confirmed, it would be in the top ten strongest EQs ever recorded.

Loma Prieta was M7.1 by comparison.

Depends on earthquake depth, how far off the coast, etc, etc.

But yes. 8.8 is destructive/catastrophic regardless of location if it's near anywhere where civilization is.

They are reporting 20ft tsunami warnings for Miyagi.

That 7.9 was initial reports, it is getting upgraded.

The footage is pretty intense... My thoughts are with the residents of the coastal areas right now...

So much for the emergency training people get. All I've seen from the footage is people running around screaming or trying to look good for the camera. No one getting under desks or somewhere stable.

Aljazeera has a chopper filming the tsunami. It's currently running on my local PBS station.

Running on all the local channels here as well. Surreal and terribly disturbing.

Hope our friends out there are ok.

Wow. This footage is amazing and so disturbing. Watching people getting washed away by the tsunami. There have to be a lot of people dying in those cars and trucks.

Japan is going to need a LOT of help. This looks bigger than Katrina in some respects.

They're talking of the tsunami hitting Tokyo. If that happens, it's going to get a lot worse

I loved Japan while I was there. Isn't PacMan there?

My thoughts are with everyone there.
