I know you car guys are out there in force, so heres my dilemma. I have a 1986 Toyota 4Runner with about 325,000 miles on it, the transmission has just been rebuilt however id like to put an engine with more power than the 22re thats currently in it. I'm not a total noob at cars, but they're not my forte so some advice would be nice. Thanks in advance.
(Yes I am aware oy my typing error, so don't shove it around)

The 22RE is perhaps the greatest engine ever as your 325,000 miles can attest to. Honestly, I wouldn't replace it with anything but another 22RE. You can do all kinds of fun things with them (turbo, headers, etc) but I don't know how California legal they are. Here's some food for thought:

Im not saying its a bad engine, I just need a little more power from it. but moding it might not be a bad idea either.

If it is a 4wd, I would just put lower gears in it. All the smog legal parts put together wont net you more than maybe 15hp anyway, and a engine swap will cost more than the truck is worth. If you are set on a swap, find a side hit Tacoma with the 3.4l and swap everything over including trans, harness all emissions equipment so you can get it BAR labeled and your truck will rip. You will also be able to get better aftermarket stuff for it like a TRD smog legal supercharger. Or you could just sell it and get a Tacoma

Hi.

I totally agree with sticking with the original type of engine.

I'd guess that a car like that isn't worth a lot over there, and without passing the emissions tests, less, no matter what's under the hood.

Having done numerous engine swaps over the years, I have to remind You that there's quite a bit work, skill and expertise involved in that. Even if it seems like a simple, straightforward swap, You'll need all sorts of tools and a hoist of some kind in order to avoid injury and other kind of damage.

If You decide to go ahead, have fun and don't injury yourself.

Regards
Sam

If cars aren't your forte I wouldn't be swapping an engine.

What are mod laws like in Cali?

4BT Cummins for all the power you could want, and it will NEVER die. You will have to raise the truck a bit though if you havent already. (NEED pictures) Couldnt find a Video of a 4runner with a 4BT in it but here I have one in a Ford Bronco:

or:

or Lexus makes a 4.0L V8 that would give you a little boost. I was able to find a 4runner with the Lexus 4.0L V8:

Id put the Cummins in it though

I have no idea about emissions laws and what not though. I live in the backwoods.

has to be the same model year or newer, retain all emissions equipment from new engine, and the same or less gross weight rating vehicle (no truck to car swaps).
