9297 Earthquakes since 4 sept 2010.
We just got hit by a swam of earthquakes today. Geologist are saying this is a very rare event, with this amount of plate tectonic activity. If you want to know more: Christchurch Quake Map |

And my speakers almost exploded when March 3 came up.

We've been getting big earthquakes and swams of aftershocks. Been getting aftershocks all night. People have had enough and are leaving. |

| A lot of it depends on where you are. An earthquake at the San Andreas fault will net so much damage in a certain area, while the same magnitude earthquake at the New Madrid fault will cause much more damage over a much greater area. I think it has something to do with the type of soil or bedrock or something.

So in addition to the magnitude of the quake, how far beneath the surface the quake is centered, and what types of material the Earth's crust in the area is made from, you have to consider whether the buildings in the area affected by the quake are built up to earthquake standards. Look at how bad the damage has been in areas like Haiti, Turkey, and China where the schools, apartment buildings, etc. were not up to standards, for whatever reason. While a lot of the more current quakes in California and Japan have not had as much damage from quakes - except to older buildings that were built at times before construction standards including earthquake codes. Yep, if - when - the New Madrid fault lets loose again, there will be a lot more damage to buildings than would be caused by a similar sized quake on the West Coast, not only due to the structure of the Earth's crust, but also because many of the buildings in the area were not built to earthquake standards. The point five (or therabouts) earthquake we had on the East Coast not only created more of a sensation here because we don't get quakes very often, but if things had been built with quakes in mind, what damage there was probably would not have occurred. If we ever get a point seven or higher earthquake on the East Coast, you'll probably see far more damage here than you did when point seven or larger earthquakes took place on the West Coast.

I hope the plates settle for your area soon and without much more fuss. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
