(9th Annual) Favorite Horror Movies Thread

Sign in to disble this ad
I do this every year around Halloween- it's a chance for new members to talk about their favorite horror flicks and old members to post about any new discoveries or old gems they've found.

A good amount of new horrors came out this year, although I've missed a lot of them. I'm renting the new Nightmare on Elm Street next week, but I don't hold out much hope for it. I've got a bunch of stuff waiting in my Instant Queue right now- Dead Snow, From Beyond, City of the Living Dead, etc. I'm thinking of watching The Human Centipede just for giggles. I saw a few great horrors from Europe last year (Inside, Let the Right One In, Martyrs), so if anyone has any recommendations from ones that have come out this year, let me know. I've never gotten too into the Asian horror scene, which is too bad as they play a lot of them on some of the movie channels we get on DirecTV. Saw Orphan, Pandorum, and Paranormal Activity, and those were all pretty good.

The latest "Monster Madness" series is going on right now over at Cinemassacre. For anyone that hasn't seen it, James Rolfe of Cinemassacre (aka The Angry Video Game Nerd) puts out a new horror/sci fi movie review for every day in October. This is the third or fourth year he's done it- this year the focus is on schlocky horrors- fun stuff.

Oh, and I don't watch Ghost Hunters, but they apparently did an episode this year at the Norwich State Hospital, which is a decaying mental institute that's right up the street from me, so I'll probably track that down.

So any new favorites, any new flicks you want to see?

Someone gave me a DVD of Drag Me To Hell, looking forward to watching that.

Forgot about that one- it's a really fun movie. Very Evil Dead 2-ish.

Does your copy have commentary on it? I rented it when it first came out, and it was one of those discs that have almost no special features- I'm hoping there's a version with commentary out there, as Sam Raimi's commentaries are usually pretty funny.

Speaking of which, they just put out a Blu Ray version of Evil Dead with a new commentary on it (they've done multiple commentaries for each of those movies now). I don't own a Blu Ray player, but I'd like to check that one out.

Nope, no commentary, honestly, I don't think I've ever watched the commentary of a movie before.

I need to grab the Blu Ray of Evil Dead, been using my PS3 as player, very handy.

I really enjoyed Let Me In when I saw it last week at the theater.

Let the Right One In was excellent. Can't see how the US remake will be any better.

Saw PIN recently. Very weird and creepy but a little slow in the middle. Worth watching.

I think I am going to do an 8 day countdown to Halloween and watch a horror movie every night, starting with Halloween III.

The hero of that movie is so unlikable- he drinks, smokes, hates his family, and cheats on his wife through the whole thing

True, but the movie is underrated, imo.

I guess I have a soft spot 80s horror. Cripes, when did I turn into a maudlin old man?

Late 70s/early 80s is by far my favorite horror era.

I think that guy was in Night of the Creeps too, or something similar.

It seems like I've seen most movies from this era. Any obscure, really good films you can recommend?

Night of the Demon, 1957? If you haven't already. Quaint old-school scariness, Martin Scorsese choice for one of the list of the '11 scariest horror films of all time'.

I don't know if anything's unknown from that era anymore- a couple of the lesser known ones I've seen would be Happy Birthday to Me, The Burning, Madman, and Burial Ground.
