Which ____ is best for metal?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am thinking of becoming the worlds first upright metal bassist. I'll probably be asking which upright is best for metal sometime soon.

There are so many posts that ask "which (fill in the blank) is best for metal", and I started thinking about this. You really don't see many "which ____ is good for Jazz, blues, classical, fusion, country, bluegrass, etc. A few, but not many. I'll say up front that while it's impressive to hear someone play 10,000 notes a second, if the music isn't saying anything it's just a demonstration, not communication.

Having said that up front, I began to wonder why there are so many questions about which things are good for metal. I have some proposed possible reasons listed below. I tried to approach it from both ends of the spectrum. Add your own as you see fit.

1) Metal is the hardest form of music to play and it takes a village to learn to play metal.

2) Metal players have damaged their hearing and depend on the hearing of others.

3) Most metal bass players picked up the instrument for the first time yesterday

4) The closest most metal players have come to instruction is a visit to the local guitar center.

5) Metal players think more that classic rock, blues, jazz, or classical players

6) Metal players are smarter than musicians who play other forms of music.

7) It's hard to make the gray matter work after all that meth.

8) The leather they are wearing is from China and was treated with the same toxic chemicals that was in the tainted sheetrock and it has impared their ability to think and compare.

9) Warwick basses are toxic or have some thought-nullifying properties.

10) Is using your own reason good for metal?

On a more serious note, it's probably because 1. it tends to attract younger players, who are in turn more likely to ask those sort of questions 2. it is highly technical, and many people (of all ages and styles) equate "I can't do it" with "My equipment is wrong for what I'm trying to do" 3. many metal bands feature down tuned guitars fighting the bass (and double kick pedals on the drum) for sonic space. Between all the stringed instruments being fuzzed out, all trying to play in the same frequencies, playing really fast, and just generally being all mushy it's tough to distinguish the sound of each instrument. So that leads to "Does my bass tone sound like the music I like?"

I dunno quite what you're trying to stir up but we did rock out Enter Sandman with my Stagg EUB and it growled up a storm. Not easy to play fast and furious with good form on upright though. Good on ya if you can pull that off.

Good! I started it just because I knew you'd enjoy it! Your consistently negative replys to my posts brighten my day.
