Sadly there are so many people around the world who would have been willing to adopt those babies.

I remember hearing that this was going to happen 15 or 20 years ago.

People could if it weren't made virtually impossible to adopt out of those countries.

No nation wants to be known as a baby breeding factory for foreigners.

Since these countries are getting richer everyday, my guess is that these many of these men will marry foreign women and Russia is next door to China.

Sadly the orphanages are still full of unadopted babies.

It is happening in India and the situation is terrible, more so in rural India. Some north Indian states have sex ratios of 850 (or fewer) women per 1000 men The main reason for it is the social status of women, or shall I say the girl-child, as girls are seen as a burden, the primary reasons for that being:

(a) Girls are perceived to be of little worth compared to boys as the boys can help the family by going out and earning a living.

(b) A girl needs to be 'married off' and, as per tradition, the girl's family bears a majority of the cost marriage, and, often, has to pay a large amount by way of dowry, as well

(c) In relation to the above points, any expenditure on a girl's upbringing is also thought to be useless.

The situation is not this bad in larger cities and towns, though. Also, the concept of female 'inferiority' is less dominant in the south of India than the north.

It was an ordeal for my brother to adopt my niece from China, but it was kid's play compared to the USA.

Right, largely because of hoops required to jump through and lack of administrative support.

When you have people waiting up to 3 years to adopt a child it's easy to connect the dots.

You're right. Best to just continue aborting them and/or sticking them in orphanages.

China could have 10x the adoptions and It still would not be known as "a baby breeding factory for foreigners"

Actually, adoption out of China was extremely common for several years, with around 6,000 coming to the USA every year, and many others going to Canada, the U.K., and elsewhere. Jon Stewart joked about the trend on the Daily Show, when he said he'd actually seen an Asian baby in Central Park with Asian parents.

We adopted our younger daughter from Guang Xi province in 2003, and our little neighborhood in Philadelphia includes at least four other girls adopted from China around this time. It was quite the project, but as Diogenes said, it was easier in many respects than a domestic adoption. Adopting from India was more difficult, partly because, at least back then, preference was given to families of Indian descent.

In recent years, the Chinese government has made adoption more difficult for U.S. citizens, but I believe it's become much easier to adopt within China. This is good news IMO, largely because it will at least partially redress the population imbalance in China. I was worried about this when I started learning of the high number of adoptions, all of which involved girls.

I've even read that in the US one of the leading causes for the choice of abortion is the sex of the child. Although in the US it's not always girls that get chosen, they are still chosen more often.

One of the interesting issues will be if a "gay gene" has been discovered, will parents test for it and have the child aborted. I really believe we've opened a can of worms in using abortion as just another contraceptive that is really troubling

But remember they have little or no moral objections to abortion yet there are some roadblocks to adoption. Maybe out of fear that the kids will become sex slaves. But perhaps they still see themselves as breeding factories, especially if payment is used to grease the wheels on adoptions, even if it is not PC to say so

I dont mean to come off as insensitive, but I thought this was common knowledge. Actually, I take that back. I had known this was going on in China, but I didnt know the situation was similar in India.

What did they think would happen if everyone opted to have a son instead of a daughter?
