So, I know it's really none of my business, but I figured it would be interesting to see what you guys think about it. I had a REALLY good laugh reading the comments (from both sides of the argument) in the article. http://www.mercurynews.com/top-stories/ci_14284156

I'm not even going to waste my time reading the article. It has a name so why change it. Its known as the devils mountain because it has 3 peaks like the devils horns and was called that since the spanish came to this area.

First of all, there a good many cities around here with religious names: San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles. If the change request is because of it's religious, offensive, nature, why don't we change them all? Because there are non-christian folk who are offended by the use of christian religious symbols such as these city names.
But what I suspect is REALLY behind this is this: There is a group of republicans who are trying to get every county in the US to 1 "thing" for Reagan. So, lets create some confusion and angst, and see what we can get away with. Maybe we can get a mountain.
Later,
edg

Mount Diablo sounds cool, sounds like a mountain should, imposing, powerful...really big and high!
Mount Reagan sounds like a snooze fest, who wants to climb mount Reagan...
"Dude, I climbed Reagan"
response: 'That's nice"
"Dude I climbed Mount Diablo"
response: "Ohh man! What is there like brimstone up there and **&#?!"
Also I'm an Atheist so my natural reaction to this guy is "You really believe in the devil, non metaphorically and yet you want to be in charge of naming something?" |

edg | I think you're reading too much into this. The guy is just a kook, plain and simple.
From the article:
Mijares, a devout Christian, says he believes the word "Diablo" — Spanish for "devil" — is "derogatory and profane," according to the federal board report. Mijares was unavailable for comment Thursday.
. . .
Mijares argued that the devil, or "diablo," was a "living person" so that name should also be prohibited. He eventually settled on three alternative options: Mount Yahweh, Mount Miwok or Mount Ohlone.
