ok, a lot of you guys (granted, generally the younger among you) use OT as your ranty soapbox, and usually you get away with it with only minor ribbing from your OT buddies unless you're completely ridiculous about it. (won't name names)(looks really hard at username).

now it's my turn.

if you ever get bit by the bug to play an MMO, do not, and i repeat, DO NOT EVER buy a game from sony online entertainment. they are buggily written, always ALWAYS requiring at least 3 months after release to even become remotely playable, poorly supported, severely mismanaged, and the dev/mgmt teams are ignorant of actual gameplay and make it a point to ignore their playerbase's concerns until the entire community is raging or on the verge of quitting.

the ironic thing about this is that these absurd qualities are not only evident in the management of this company, but actually were -embraced- by the president of the company. he has said as much in interviews - he was amazed that when one of their games (EQ2) was released in korea, folks played for about 10 minutes and then quit enmasse, and rose such a stink about it that there were threats of legal action going to be taken against the company. apparently the korean gamer community actually expected the game they paid for to actually -work-, the development team who provided it to actually be -responsive- and the company that released it to actually be -ethical-.

so yes, SOE sucks bigtime.

now's your chance to make fun of one of your admins for once playing an online game.

I don't play online, but I quite enjoy my Xbox, in particular, Fallout 3.

lol yeah, SWG was my poison of choice. started over 6 years ago. that game will go down in MMO history as the one mmo that did everything wrong, a case study in how -not- to develop/market an mmo, and how -not- to treat your customers.

how could they fail with a starwars property? and not just fail, but fail so epicly? amazing.

What game in particular are you talking about, John?

I never played SWG, but I'm highly anticipating The Old Republic.

I'm way worse off than you. I'm addicted to ZUMA, which is not even worthy of addiction. http://www.popcap.com/games/zuma

Thanks for the heads up on the sony stuff, but I have trouble with any game with a difficulty beyond the above.

my biggest experience with soe lies with starwars galaxies, but i played (briefly) eq2 and matrix online.

there's another thing - matrix online just recently closed. one of the biggest movie trilogies ever - a huge IP, and they killed it with their incompetance. granted, they bought it from the original developers, but still - this should have been a no brainer for them. they had no investment in the original development, all they had to do was maintain the system and advertise the game (it was actually really cool) and they couldn't even do that.

it's going to be a very guided experience (i.e. not a sandbox) but that being said, bioware at least has a good history of putting out quality, well written, relatively bug-lite games.

speaking of which, SOE's doing "DC Online", a superhero MMO in the dc universe. many of the developers on that game are veterans of working on the SOE game i have the most experience with - starwars galaxies.

anyone with even the slightest interest in trying that game out - maybe you're a DC fan, maybe you're just interested in giving an MMO a spin - take my advice.

steer clear. seriously.

JT, because I take pity upon your pitiable plight, I render unto you a ray of hope in massively multiplayer gaming:

www.guildwars2.com

after years of development and total secrecy, it has finally, as of 4:00 AM this morning Pacific time, gone public.

Sony does online games?? I guess they weren't satisfied with scewing up the music industry, they needed to stick their fingers in the world of online computer gaming too.

I am a long-time MMO nerd (I have played bunches, starting with Ultima Online), and I played from release on the original Everquest PVP server, which had probably triple the bugs of the rest of the bug-ridden game, due to the open PVP environment. That first summer, the servers spent as much time down as they did up. And Brad McQuaid burned into our minds one of the most reviled phrases regarding buggy, non-functional game features: "working as intended."

I wouldn't play another SOE game now if it were endorsed by Jesus and let you win dates with Megan Fox.

contains a lot of mistakes and faults in the game, whether it be controls, interface, or whatever.
