Affordable dress shirts?

Sign in to disble this ad
I need to pick up some new dress shirts. Does anyone have any recommendations for some entry-level dress shirt makers? I've been hearing a lot about Charles Tyrwhitt, but out of the things I hear some are good some are bad... Any recommendations?

Tyrwhitt makes good shirts... unfortunately my shoulders are too big for their slim-fit shirts.

There's always Paul Frederick, I see them as almost the American Charles Tyrwhitt.

And then there's Thomas Pink, if you want to keep the Euro styling. A big more expensive than CT or PF though.

Most of my dress shirts are Jos A. Bank or Brooks Brothers, just be sure to hit a good sale.

Go to a store like Khols and buy shirts there. They look decent enough and they last.

Are PF shirts true to their size? I heard CT shirts run bigger, and pits are cut lower than normal, that's why I'm hesitating to buy them.

Haven't bought a PF in a few years (I've gotten fatter since then) but IIRC they ran true to their size. As far as CT, I'd recommend hopping the train into the city to visit their retail store in Midtown Manhattan:

377 Madison Ave
(between 46th St & 47th St)
New York, NY 10017

Consumer reports did a comparison of basic dress shirts a few months back and had good things to say about JC Penny's house brand Stafford shirts. I have two and they're the only dress shirts I can wash myself without having to iron.

I might go to NYC this weekend, if not then next weekend for sure. When I order CT shirts online, are they shipped from US or UK? How long does shipping usually take?

I believe mine shipped from the states, but it's been a bit so my memory might be a bit off... I don't recall anything particularly slow.

My wife just ordered a bunch of short sleeve dress shirts from JCP for me to wear to work. I deal with chemicals so I hate to wear expensive clothes and ruin them but I still have to look decent. These are very nice shirts for $10.

Where do you live? I get 5 shirts for $50 at Hollywood Suit Outlet and they are nice and fit great.

Just ordered 2 Paul Frederick shirts. Hopefully they fit well! If not I'll bump this thread back up!

+1 on the Paul Fredericks. If you haven't bought anything from them before, I think you can buy up to four shirts for $20.00 each. They are nice, high-quality shirts and come in a lot of size variations. Call them up and they can walk you through your order.

Oops, I meant 3 shirts. 3 for $89.00, and $0.00 for shipping

J. C. Penney always has a nice selection of dress shirts. Many times, I wait until they have a clearance sale and pick up several very inexpensively. Their Stafford shirts look classy and hold up very well.

Any dress shirt from Nordstrom will be good. Don't forget that Land's End (now part of Sears) also sells really good shirts at affordable prices. Lands' End | Swimwear, Outerwear, Casual Clothing and more

I second the Lands End suggestion. Paul Frederick is good too...not the cheapest usually, but good for what you get when you catch a good sale.

There's also Marshall's and Nordstrom Rack. Once you know your size, it's easier.

Brooks Brothers no-iron shirts cost a little more up front, but pay for themselves in not having to iron or take to the cleaners.

You might also want to check out Boscov's Department Stores. There are several in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.
