When I was young, those geezers didn't know nothing!
Now.......
The older I get - the smarter they were.

I don't mind getting older, but it does bum me out how many people
call me Sir now than did just 10 short years ago.

But there are open minded oldsters. I played a gig last night with a guitarist in his 60s, and we did stuff by Beyonce and Elle Varner, as well as stuff by Bootsy Collins and P-Funk.

And I know that somewhere, right now, a teenage kid is listening to a Coltrane record and digging it.
Well put, I might follow Chuck Berry with The White Stripes and throw in a little Mose Allison.

What kinda old perv wants kids' legs uncrossed?

I used to think the beatles were "old people music" until i learned theory and composition from them. I love them now. Even if you dont like something you can still respect it.

Louis ck had a bit about how respecting your elders is ********. Sometimes old people are just assholes that lived long enough to grow old.

Okay, I missed something here. Kids' legs uncrossed? As far as grumpy old men you nailed it. If you are young putz there is a good chance you will be an old putz.

I see these two statements all the time.

Music died after the 70s.

The kids don't want to play with anyone over 40.

Gee I wonder why.

Played my set in church on Sunday and sat in the second row next to my wife. A good friend was in front talking about wineskins. He said "So, to make a wineskin you have to kill and old goat. You know, I am looking right at Steve (me) as I say this but don't get any ideas." That's the first time I've been called an 'old goat'. I guess I have arrived.

Ok, I gotta ask, who would you say then is a better artist? I know it's subjective, but in your opinon, Beyonce or Coltrane? There seems to be a huge disparity in quality of work there to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

I still love the 60's psychedelic stuff, the70's rock/hard rock, the 80's dawn of metal, the 90's hard rock/metal, the 00's becoming more diverse with many new female front woman rock/metal bands.

Iv'e always told my self since being a kid - "if I ever get tired of new music; I will truely be old".

Move with the times or get run over by them. I can easily find something new that I like with just a little searching.

Never judge a musical era on its pop element alone, either. That's most often the product of marketing analysis geared to the lowest common denominator of society - aka "consumer product". It's more of a reflection of the market and societal values of an era than the quality of its musicians.

Yeah, I think "underground" (unsigned or non-major label) music will always have greatness contained within it. Without it music would cease to be. It's just the mainstream pablum (radio & tv) that seems to consistently deteriorate in the moderately lengthed span of time that I've been observing it. The internet is a beautiful thing.

Yup, I still love stuff recorded a long time ago, but a lot of it doesn't get any airplay? Ever hear the Fugs? Pigbag? Zappa's "The Grand Wazoo"? Magic Sam, Houndog Taylor, Dave Van Ronk. All old stuff I don't hear much on the radio

Captain Beefheart!

"Fast and bulbous."

"That's right, the mascara snake. Fast and bulbous. Also a tinned teardrop."

"Bulbous also tapered."

You're comparing apples and oranges.

Coltrane is a jazz master

Beyonce is jiggly bits and a strong-ish voice.

Beyonce = Donna Summer give or take 20 years.

Coltrane = That bird getting squashed on the highway last night.

Nothing to do with the era of music.

Anyone who refuses to acknowledge that music hasn't really changed much since the mid 20th Century is deluded.

I agree with the correction. It's "meat", not "beets". (Ok others have also posted that.)

Coltrane, hands down.

Of course music has changed, but certain elements always remain the same too. And the older music inspires the new music. The Beach Boys, of all things, are an inspiration to Daft Punk.

Nothing quite as creative as a young musician inspired by old music that he can't really play yet- but what he does play has a newness to it, a freshness. An honest, unselfconscious reinvention of the musical wheel usually sounds good.

Right here! I grew up in rock, learned about the blues, then...I discovered jazz. That changed everything. Now I'm learning, and I aspire to greater heights than I ever thought possible.
