Alabama TBers- need some suggestions!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,
We're going to be heading down to Alabama over 4th of July weekend near Montgomery. My stepson is in the USAF and he just got transferred to Maxwell AFB.

I'm looking for a couple of suggestions for restaurants and maybe some inexpensive places to take our kids (11 YO son and 12 YO daughter). We're staying in Millbrook or Plattville so somewhere near those towns would be appreciated. A great Southern BBQ place is clearly a must!!

Also, a couple of good music stores/pawn shops would also be appreciated. However, my stepson (who is a USAF policeman) claims that Montgomery itself is not a terribly safe city so any stores should be outside the city.

Any and all help will be appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

My suggestions would be a Montgomery Biscuits baseball game and Dreamland BBQ.

www.biscuitsbaseball.com
www.dreamlandbbq.com

I used to stop at Elite Music when I passed through town, but it's been about two years since I've been in and their website is looking pretty barren at the moment.

2 good suggestions- thanks very much!
I love minor league baseball-good to see they're home while we're down there.

That BBQ place looks great too! Thanks!

Unfortunately we never got to the ballpark for a game. We did see it when we went to the River Walk park area but we were there mid-day.
We also did not get to try Dreamland BBQ- there were just too many little kids with us to go in there. It would not have been any fun at all.

I did get to try a Jim & Nick's BBQ restaurant that was right near our hotel. VERY good BBQ there!

We also went to the Bass Pro Shop (also right near the hotel)-I'm not much of an outdoorsman but I almost bought a crossbow!!

We also visited a couple of pawnshops in the suburbs. One had 4 or 5 decent basses including what I think was a 5-string Schecter Model T. The other one had a few acoustic guitars and no other musical instruments.

The Bass Pro Shop is most wonderful. They have a restaraunt there so you never have to leave.

Yeah-that place was great! We had dinner there one night. Not cheap but the fish was excellent. That was pretty much our "splurge" dinner for the trip.

Prattville (Bass Pro) has many national chain restaurants: Ruby Tuesday's, Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse, Olive Garden.

A Colonel buddy lives in Prattville, and I would describe it as laid back & friendly-not at all like the hustle/bustle around Atlanta, or Birmingham.

I saw the national chain places but we were really trying to avoid what we can get at home.
We did visit a couple of regional chains- Zaxby's and Jim & Nick's. Plus we had some home-cooked meals at my stepson's house.

Definitely agree that its a friendly area though. We're already planning next year's trip down there.
