The other week, I was complaining that Bicycle Day always gets overshadowed by the more popular 4/20.

R.I.P.

That man has brought me some pretty awesome times.

It really is a shame his discovery blew up in his face and wasn't used for what it was to be used for primarily.

Hoffman dead at 102... how sad! But what a great life. I was inspired to write a cheesy poem for Albert Hoffman:

Hoffman was a man, who was interested in minds.
A psychedelic chemist, he was years before his time.
He found his problem child, first in 1938
He left her alone, for at least 5 years, it was his psychedelic fate.

On the 16th day of April, in 1943
‘ol Albert accidentally took a dose of some good ‘ol LSD.
He started feeling funny, and started getting high
He rode home on a bicycle, his assistant at his side.

The trip was unbelievable, like nothing seen before.
Hoffman could not believe how strong, or how strange the effects all were.
He saw the power of this drug, he saw the psychedelic light, he imagined all the benefits for all of mankind’s minds.
He took a larger dose, after just 3 days of time, 250 micrograms and deliberate this time.

Hoffman called it his problem child, and medicine for the soul.
It was for exploration and healing of the mind, that was to be it’s one true role.
He’s known to have said, "It is just a tool to turn us into what we are supposed to be".
By the middle 60's, 'ol Tim Leery adopted the drug and took it to the streets.

Timothy Leary, loved to trip acid, and thought it was all great.
He shouted to all , from the top of the mountain, to go get high today.
The counter culture loved the message; you know they loved the trip.
Leery grew famous, a psychedelic guru, turned on, dropped out and tuned in.

The establishment, of the time, the government, the man.
Saw the people all “freaking out”, and knew they must do what they can.
The government said no more, to exploring of your minds, this too we can just take away and LSD is now a crime.
No more blotter, over the counter, at the pharmacy to explore ones mind.

Now, Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley and Alfred Hubbard all had their part to play.
But the man who really discovered the drug, has the most right to say.
Judge him not, and know his intent, and his belief till his dying day.
Know yourself, take a look inside, and happy bicycle day.

R.I.P. Albert Hoffman

Summary
Albert Hofmann was born in Baden, Switzerland in 1906. He graduated from the University of Zürich with a degree in chemistry in 1929 and went to work for Sandoz Pharmaceutical in Basel, Switzerland. With the laboratory goal of working towards isolation of the active principles of known medicinal plants, Hofmann worked with Mediterranean squill (Scilla maritima) for several years, before moving on to the study of Claviceps purpurea (ergot) and ergot alkaloids.

Over the next few years, he worked his way through the lysergic acid derivatives, eventually synthesizing LSD-25 for the first time in 1938. After minimal testing, LSD-25 was set aside as he continued with other derivatives. Four years later, on April 16, 1943, he re-synthesized LSD-25 because he felt he might have missed something the first time around. That day, he became the first human to experience the effects of LSD after accidentally ingesting a minute amount. Three days later, on April 19, 1943, he decided to verify his results by intentionally ingesting 250 ug of LSD. This day has become known as "Bicycle Day" as Hofmann experienced an incredible bicycle ride on his way home from the lab.

In addition to his discovery of LSD, he was also the first to synthesize psilocybin (the active constituent of 'magic mushrooms') in 1958. Albert Hofmann, known as the 'father of LSD', continued to work at Sandoz until 1971 when he retired as Director of Research for the Department of Natural Products. He continued to write, lecture, and play a leading role as an elder in the psychedelic community until his quick and relatively painless death from a heart attack at the age of 102.

Huzzah! Let's celebrate someone who directly help contribute to mental illness, psychological trauma, and a culture of self-absorption.

Do you have any idea what you're talking about? LSD was used very successfully to treat mental illness and alcoholism as well as psychological trauma such as PTSD until it was made illegal by our over-reactory government.

RIP Albert Hoffmann. I've just started writing a song about bicycle day this past week and now I'm totally going to have to play it in his honor when it's done.

Actually, I do. There are zero studies that indicate LSD as a successful course of treatment for mental illness or alcoholism.

RIP. A true pioneer and psychonaut. It's a shame that his legacy and entheogenic research in general has become so thoroughly discredited.

I don't think you know much about Hoffman. He was a legitimate scientist doing his job. he did not promote recreational use at all. He did believe in medicinal use (the very reason it was created)

Now, if we were talking about Timothy Leary, your remarks might be more appropriate.
