The Alcohol Aura?

Ok, I'm pretty sure it's not just me who can "smell" when I person is drunk or tipsy. You don't have to look at them or hear them, just sniff around a bit and you know that someone nearby has had a few. They don't have to be breathing in your direction or anything. My question is why can you smell the alcohol on them? I go into bars and clubs and don't smell a lick until I get to that person and I'm sure there's more alcohol at the location than what's in their system. Any science out the that can explain this?

It comes through their pores. It also depends on the person and how much they've had to drink. Some people wreak after a few beers, and some can be scent-free after they're hammered. I'm one of the second ones. My wife has told me the same thing.

Some of us are weird in that we find that smell to actually be pleasing.

You, obviously, have never worked in a hot, sweaty factory next to an alcoholic. I hate that job.

Yup. When I was a substance abuse therapist, we actually had therapist there who could smell the metabolite of cocaine (called benzoylecgonine) on people when they recently used. I don't think she was ever wrong either. When she smelled it she screened them, and I'm pretty sure her accuracy was always spot on. I have never heard of anyone else with a beak that sensitive!

I was at Home Depot once and there was this older couple shopping for garden pots that totally reeked of wine.

I couldn't believe they were out in public smelling that strongly of alcohol.
The scary thing is, I think they had both been drinking, which means one of them had to have driven there drunk.

I can smell alcohol from a mile away. I also find that the taste stays in my mouth for a long time as well, which is one of the reasons that I don't like to drink much.

No, my coworkers have to, though.

I'm sure it'd be overwhelming if I experienced it regularly, but I actually find the malty sweetness to be pleasant when at shows or other places that involve sweating and drinking in confined places.

Kwesi, your olfactory senses must have gone into red alert overdrive meltdown out on Long Island last Sunday!

To me it's always a copper scent. Anytime someone who's had a few always smells like a penny that's been held in someone's hand too long. Known a few people where I could always tell if they'd been drinking, the smell was usually present. Takes forever to get that smell out of a car if you have to give them a ride somewhere too...

Whenever I smell wine, I see green about 5 feet ahead of me. The closer I get, the darker it gets.

i definitely smelled it on some guy next to me at a movie a couple years ago, though im not sure if it was the metabolite or just the smell of coke/cut. the guy was flipping out and arguing with someone through most of it, left multiple times, and eventually just left for good.

it was a vin diesel movie, though, so maybe that irritated him. it kind of irritated me.

I remember walking to the 24 hour grocery store to get chips during one of the epic residence Thursday night parties. Coming back I could smell the alcohol before I had even reached the building.
