This strikes me as selfish because he certainly did not care about causing everyone else to run late. My guess is all he cared about was that he could afford just to get another flight and finish his game.

Kind of reminds me of a story my Grandma told me,
About ten years ago she was riding a BC ferry and the Premier of BC just so happened to be on board and he pulled some strings and got the captain to drive the boat 45 minutes of course to go see Saltspring Island.
Just goes to show you how power can go to peoples heads sometimes.
