I am looking for a free spreadsheet for my mac, so what is the best? I lost my serial number for iLife, so I can't use numbers. Thanks in advance.

The serial for iLife doesn't have anything to do with iWork, which Numbers is part of. iWork does not require serials for installation.

Confirm Google Docs has a spreadsheet.

I just downloaded open office. It told me that I needed a serial number for iWork, I was just assuming that was the same as iLife.

Open office works well for me, I do all my projects and lab reports with it.

Which iWork are you using? I know for a fact that 09 does not require it. I don't remember if 08 does, but anything before 08 DOES required a serial.

While not a Mac user, I have been quite happy using Open Office. It's got a very capable clone of Visual Basic, which I depend on. You can also use other scripting systems like Python if you don't care for Basic.
