Yep, last night, I went to the bank to deposit my paycheque only to find my debit card had been blocked. I called the bank and apparently someone had obtained my debit card info and tried to make withdrawals ($700) from my account - only thing was, I had no money in it! That's what happens when you try to steal from a student, I guess.
So now, every time I look at my basses, amp, ever-growing pile of pedals, tuition bills and eternally empty bank account, I know I can go to sleep at night in the comfort of knowing that even if someone manages to get my bank info, it'll be like squeezing blood from a stone.
I still don't know whether to feel happy that I didn't get ripped off, or because I'm so poor I'm not even worth stealing from. |

Fortunately, we caught it before it went too far. However, we did get hit and the bank did not help at all. Maybe it is different in Canada, but in the US, ATM withdrawals do not come with consumer protections like VISA and MC. Glad to hear the thief was not successful in your case.
I am nearly certain I know how it happened to me. I went to an ATM machine on the spur of the moment to get some quick cash. Turns out the ATM was rigged. (Google "Lebanese Loop" and "ATM cameras". This might be what happened to you if they actually managed to get your PIN.)
Something like that happened. Exactly how, not sure, but it was definitely around that machine. So, beware of those unfamiliar ATM machines.

It took the bank 2 months to fix it, which eventually led to me switch banks.
Now, I keep all my money in a seperate savings account that can't be touched by my debit/ATM, and only transfer a couple hundred in at a time for spending and bills.

I heard from a friend that worked at a gas station that some guy was caught tampering with the ATm/Credit machine on a pump, using that to steal peoples info. I believe thats how they got my dads info without actually haing his card. The tried to buy a computer from an Apple store and the bank alerted my father. There were a few other charges that he didnt make on there as well. Luckily, the bank worked with him to get his money back.

My homeless friend keeps his cash in a book on our bookshelf. A booke about Hares, not rabbits.

i keep half of it in a copy of that "A Tribal History of American Hardcore" book and the other half in a generic 'History of the World's Martial Arts' book.
After rent/car insurance/utilities/loan payments/cable i usually never have more than about $500 at one time. It's pretty easy to keep track of. *knock on wood*

I've never had a debit card and never will. That's MY way of ensuring funds can't be siphoned off... either incrementally or all at once. Plus I "spread the wealth" over several different accounts and completely different banks, to further thwart bank account thieves. .. works for me |

Seriously, I sometimes wonder how safe my account is.
If someone got to my account, it could be disastrous for my budget paying my bills.
