is it worth dealing with AT&T to have one? i have been a mac user for about 2 years now and doubt i will ever go back to pc's.
as a pda how does the iphone compare to the treo and blackberry?
is it just a cool toy or are the apps worth the $$$?

If you want a phone and a PDA, the iPhone is a good idea. If you only need one or the other, you don't really have to bother. Find a good phone and/or PDA (a Palm would be very appropriate).

1) I'm far more organized than ever thanks to my iPhone. I upload everything I have to do to Entourage (will use iCal on the next computer) and it syncs with my iPhone. I have alerts going off 15 minutes before I have to leave my home to do anything. Helped me get through my last semester of college where I had a million things to do a day.
2) Email is incredibly easy to use on these things. Yes, the other ones have email too, but once you get used to typing on a software keyboard, it's rather quick.
3) Some apps are absolutely worth the money. I have two that I paid for. One to keep track of my gas mileage for $0.99 and one to use my iPhone as a wireless external hard drive for $4.99. Anywhere I'm on a wireless network, I can save or retrieve files from my iPhone.
As far as comparisons to the Treo and the Blackberry... I've never gotten jealous over someone's Palm or Blackberry, but they long for my iPhone. If you don't want to switch providers, yes, you can get by with a Treo or Blackberry, but the switch is absolutely worth it for the easiest smartphone to use, IMO.
I'm not going back, even if it means I have to live with AT&T for the rest of my life.

I have both. iPhone for personal, Blackberry for work. I'd be very surprised if the iPhone ever gets anywhere near the market penetration for business that the Blackberry has. It isn't half the business phone that the BB is and the takeup rate in business will probably mirror the same takeup rate as Apple products generally in business.
The best reason to buy an iPhone: Apple Smugness.

| | | | I'm torn between the blackberry storm (wife has one) and the iPhone.
Whoever gets terminal services on the thing first wins my business.
until then I can't justify the extra 30$ a month.

They have been using the blackberry for a while so the immediate takeover has not happened, but there are things the blackberry can't come close to on the iPhone. You can make the same argument for MS Vista in terms of how the buisness world adopted it, that makes no association to how well it is received.
Keypad takes some getting used to, I do prefer it to an actual keypad. I'd rather have that device real estate as an LCD screen. |

I'm paying less than half that and I've got unlimited texts/image texts, and more phone call time than I care to use.
But I hear that AT&T has roll over so... Another friend says his AT&T coverage is shite, and with verizon he could get service way out in the desert in Wyoming. |

as a former cingular/att customer, their service is garbage. my brother has one, and is in nyc, so he has no complaints. here, in santa cruz, i have heard many complaints of dropped calls and poor service.
as ive said in another cell phone-related thread, it really depends on where you live, and where you intend to be, or spend your work hours, etc.
i have played with many an iphone, and they really are cool, and have all kinds of great features (the mac dual touchscreen things is pretty cool). apple is great with human interface technology, but, and maybe this is my bias, i really feel like every apple product i have ever used is meant for people who dont know that much about computers. i really feel talked down to when i use them.
my phone just makes phone calls. use a cheap phone with good service and buy a netbook or something. itll probably be close in price, and you wont have to deal with att. i would wait until the iphone leaves the att contract, if you really want one. |

But I would say, that out of the smart phone users I know, the more tech savvy ones either have iPhones, or are waiting for the iPhone to come to their service.
Yes, AT&T is the weakest part of the iPhone. The service is inferior to Verizon, even around here. However, as much as I dislike AT&T, they are improving, at least around here. It really does depend on where you plan to use it... if AT&T doesn't get good service where you intend to be, you just paid extra for an iPod Touch that makes calls sometimes.
As to your last point... I'm sorry you feel this way. Macs aren't designed for people who don't know much about computers. They're designed to be easy to use, everything placed logically. If you're used to Windows, yes, it's an adjustment and almost seems dumbed down... however, it's Microsoft's fault for getting us all used to remembering where it's hodge-podge of settings are. We've gotten far too used to the clutter.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. My parents bought me my first computer in 1998 so I would stop messing around with my dad's. I just purchased my sixth brand new computer, which is my second Mac. I've run every Microsoft operating system from Windows 3.1, 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and Vista, plus several releases of Linux, and I'm more than elated to continue using Mac products day in and day out.

I dunno, I think some of the games look fun but some of the apps are just silly. Like on the adert recently "want to find out your share of a table of five?" you put in the bill then the number of people. You can do that on any phone with a calculator, just put in the bill and divide by 5, don't think I'd want to pay for that, even if it was free it would just be a waste of space and time.
