I've been fighting gout (YOWCH) in my heel for the last week, am on meds and anti-inflammatory stuff. Rehearsal tomorrow...am I being a wimp if I beg off on this, considering that I'm using a cane to get around and am going on about 2 hours sleep a night for the last week?

Are you the very model of a modern major general? |

| | | | That's a legit excuse, so no worries on calling it off.
The following are not legit:
1) "I'm too hungover/still drunk to practice."
2) "I'm practicing with my other band."
3) "I'm dead."
Terrible excuses. |

Are you the very model of a modern major general? | I wish gout was in the past - I've had it 3-4 times, seems to run in my family. That being said, it's usually manifested when I've been partying WAY hard, so it's a PAINFUL reminder/clue to knock it off. If you've never had it, feel lucky. From what I've heard it's not THAT far off from kidney stones. I've always had it show up in my big toe, this time it's in my ankle/heel and makes it difficult to do ANYTHING comfortably.

Indocid or Indomethicin is the only thing that knocks it
down fast, other anti-inflammatories are useless. (For me.)
You can reduce the incidence of recurrence by eliminating or
reducing certain foods from your diet. Butter, shellfish like shrimp
and lobster, red meat and red wine are foods to avoid. Thus
gout was known as the 'affliction of kings'.
The pain is caused by the crystallization of urea from excess uric
acid in your body. These crystals inflame your joints in your extremities
just as if you had injected sand into the joint.
If you google it you'll find lots of info.

I've had it before (know the things that cause it) and have actually been really good on red meat/prurines/alcohol, so I'm not really sure where this one came from.
Gonna hobble into rehearsal on a cane, and I'm going straight into the PA rather than schlep gear.
