Am I The Only One That Never Cared About Christopher Reeve?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a sneaking feeling that I'm going to sound like an jerk, so let me just say beforehand: I'm about to sound like an jerk.

I know this isn't that relevant anymore, but I was talking to a few friends, and I found out (no idea how we got onto the subject) that I'm the only one that never cared about Christopher Reeve. Everyone else saw him as a hero.

Christopher Reeve was a selfish, arrogant prick. All he cared about before he was crippled was furthering his role as an actor. Once he was paralyzed, he devoted his life to furthering stem-cell research, and opened a paralysis foundation that he named the "Christopher Reeve Foundation." Any rational person can see that he didn't do it purely out of the kindness of his heart. That cause didn't seem to affect him until it effected him personally.

He showed just how arrogant he was after the accident especially. In a biography on Reeve, people with disabilities become (excuse the pun) a crutch to keep him in the spotlight, and are patronized throughout: "he has now found new meaning in life." Now instead of buying useless, extravagant things with the money he earned from acting in roles on TV, and in movies, he started buying things with the money he earned from acting like he cared about any crippled people other than himself. Oh, and where he comments that the lives of people who were born crippled "have meaning too." I'm sure they were happy to hear that.

He repeatedly spoke about how he just wanted to make crippled people out to be normal people, and just as good as anyone else, then he says that he's "still living life to the fullest." It's good to know that even as a cripple he can live life to the fullest. He later came out to say "I've noticed that there are very few roles for people in chairs... I would like to see people with disabilities featured sympathetically." That doesn't sound like he wants to be equal, it sounds like he wants to be treated special for what happened to him. And when you really listen to what he said, it's the most demeaning thing he's ever said; he wants to see crippled people pigeon-holed into another stereotype by making them a show-pony for his cause. Obviously nothing dramatic, or realistic ever happens to crippled people; their whole life is dominated by their disability.

It most likely sounds like I'm, no pun intended, beating a dead horse, but I really hate to see people that never cared about something suddenly become the biggest supporter for whatever it is just because it effects their life in someway now, and use people who have been going through it their whole lives as crying victim to bleed for a cause that they only now care about.

That is all.

- You find people in every walk of life who are career driven.

- Having a recognisable name will help a cause, so what if it's named after him, it's mutually benificial in that respect.

- Suddenly being paralysed is going to completelly change your life and your outlook.

- People do tend to have more of an interest in things that directly affect them. It wouldn't be possible to take an interest in every cause that's out there.

- Yes, you do sound like a jerk with a chip on his shoulder.

I can't help but feel that the OP is actually a hidden message to activate a sleeper terrorist cell or something. It just seems that random!

pretty much

I was looking for something in your OP to show how much of a jerk Christopher Reeve was before he got paralyzed, but it never came. Are you just saying that he's an arrogant prick by default, because he's a rich actor?

BTW, if you look for a negative motive in everything someone does, you're going to find one.

I have no interest in furthering the cause of paraplegic people today. However, I am sure that will change if I find myself severely injured and a paraplegic myself someday. Does that make me an arrogant prick too?

I loved his work on that Pink Floyd tune! What was that song they had him sing on?

Hawking can actually walk and talk, the wheelchair and computer voice was just a Halloween costume that got out of hand.

Not by default, no. Not at all because he was a rich actor. He was an arrogant prick because he didn't care about it until it effected him.

I'm not gay, but I rally for gay marriage, and for repealing DADT.

I'm not homeless, but I give money to homeless people that ask for it.

I've don't have AIDS, cancer, any mental disabilities, but I would surely give to any charities that help, or find a cure for any of those things.

People deitize him because he cared about something that could help certain people, and subsequently, himself. No one cares about anything until a celebrity tells them to.

And no, I'm not a troll, it just really makes me angry to see people blindly follow him because he portrayed Superman.

Honestly no. You know why he was a prick? Because he lied to everyone about it. I had not an ounce of respect for him; respect that I might have had if he just came out and stopped talking out of his ass about how much he cares about all crippled people. And you don't use other people with a disabilities for your own crutch.

Wait, how do you know that he didn't care about the handicapped before it happened to him?? Do you have some implicit view into the guy's mind? He's probably no different than most of us in that you view things a WHOLE LOT differently when it directly effects you. Alternatively, he may very well have been a total douche, but making that assumption without really knowing the guy, is an equally douche-y thing to do IMO. Just sayin

The OP may be the most ludicrous thing I've ever read on the internet. But I did LOL when he wrote "beat a dead horse" and "no pun intended".

Then, conversely, why is it okay for people to people to just up and assume he's an actual hero when there's at least a shred of evidence that says otherwise?
