It looks sweet, and at $199 and running android it is very tempting. Anyone preordering it?

I will be. Last week, I received a current generation one as a gift. I just printed return labels and will order once I have the Amazon credit. I thought it'd be more expensive...couldn't help but dive in.

Does a Kindle function in more ways than just an eReader, similar to a tablet, or are they solely for the purpose of reading material?

Current Kindles are dedicated E-readers, although they have an experimental (their word) very basic web-browser.

I'm pretty sure I will end up getting two of them. It will keep the kids quiet on car trips for sure.

I was just reading about the Kindle Fire earlier... I've been looking for a 7" wifi Android tablet/ereader I think I'll be preordering it. It's just what I was looking for.

I'm going to go check them out after I finish banning my daily quota of people. (I kid! I kid!) Hopefully they do tabbed browsing.

I am sorely tempted. It looks like a mighty powerful device for the money. Even the other new Kindle models look nice compared to the last gen. However, my Kindle is still less than a year old, so I'll wait till it breaks before I upgrade to one of these new ones.

8GB of storage? No thank you. People keep coming out with these devices to challenge the iPad, but they never really do in the end.

8 GB with no expansion port.

I used to hate Apple. Then my wife bought me an iPad 2 for my birthday. I'd tell you how I feel about Apple now, but I can't think of the next thing worse than hate. The thing is essentially an expensive toy ... a large iPod Touch, more or less. I can't believe it doesn't have a native wifi printing function for all wifi printers. The apps you can buy to do it are almost as lame as the iPad. Well, no, maybe they're more lame.

So I use my iPad to get my mail and go on TalkBass, which I can do just as easily from my phone. Lame.

My Droid 2 phone is far more powerful and useful than the iPad. The Droid has expandable memory and a USB port, two glaring omissions from the iPad.

Mine was bought as a toy, so I dig it. When people expect too much from it, they find reasons to dislike it. However, it does have many practical business uses.

I guess some of us are lucky enough to be able to afford expensive toys. I might rather have had more gear. Sure, my calendar and contacts are in there, but I can't make a phone call from it, like I can with my phone.

Looks good for a cheap tablet, might have been tempted to buy one if it had a camera, can't see how anybody could think it's a competitor to the ipad though.

Parents will buy the 79$ one for their kids, no doubt. It's even being released right at the beginning of holiday shopping.

We were talking about it yesterday where I work; there will for sure be two or three weeks of pointless iPad comparisons, even though it's nonsensical to assume they aim for the same market.

I want it to play games on, surf the Internet and read the news (I am a news junkie). It will do that just fine. That is all I would use an iPad for as well, this just does it cheaper.

Keep in mind this is not an Android tablet. The OS was based on Android and is probably Android at heart but unless someone jailbreaks it then it only works with Amazon material right now (which does include the Amazon App Store). There was no mention of a native email program which it a major oversight but if you use gmail there will probably be a gmail app in the Amazon store.

The wife is trying to decide if she needs an iPad or whether the Kindle Fire will be a better investment. They only have a 8gb capacity, but I heard somewhere that free Cloud storage is an option.

I totally agree with you Mike. I don't know how many people I've talked to that bought an iPad and have nothing but bad things to say about it.

They mainly buy it to replace a machine and are dumb to the fact that it is still a device. And besides and web browser and email, it still runs mobile version apps.

Before I bought my iPad I knew exactly what it did and didn't do, I'm not the kind of person that would spent $700 on something which I'm not sure I can use. There is way too much information on the Apple website for their products to not make an informed and educated purchase.

If you can't use it, don't buy it. If you bought it, Apple has a return policy. If you got it as a gift, pass it on to someone who will appreciate it.

If you enjoy surfing on a phone more power to you but I only do it when I absolutely have to. It totally works and is much more pleasant than it used to be but on that tiny screen it's not anything I would consider doing regularly.

The beauty of the iPad is the apps and if that is not something you use than absolutely the iPad is a total waste. But the recording programs and instrument practice tools available make it invaluable to me.

As far as tiny storage space...welcome to the future. Everyone is going cloud based now so internal storage will soon be moot. The iTunes cloud feature that is coming up in the fall is amazing and cheap at only $25 a year.

Not to say that I don't think Apple is an extremely greedy company. Their stuff is highly overpriced. Unfortunately it's the best OS I have ever used so I pay the price.
