The American Movie Action Hero....MIA?

Sign in to disble this ad
Seems like all the big budget action films feature guys like Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, etc. Are there no more American actors that can kick butt? Nothing against the actors I mentioned, but who can American count on to "take out the trash?" Chuck Norris has served us well but he now dispatches the bad guys on the small screen. Bruce Willis--gettin' on up there in age. Steven Segal-no thanks. Even I could dodge his telegraphed moves.

Who's out there? Marky Mark? Ashton Kutcher? Bob from the "Biggest Loser?"

I'd kind of like to see a movie where an everyman just hands people their asses... like a John McClane, but toned down.

Is Vin Deisel from the USA? Does Nic Cage count? Old Sly Stallone?
I think actors in general are being replaced by foreign exports. They work cheaper, speak some English (or are willing to learn) and can, well, ACT, which seems to be a problem for many of the Americans.

See what I mean. Ryan Reynolds can't "smart ass" comment the bad guys to death.

That would be cool, but I wonder how he could be exciting without knowledge of explosives, martial arts, being an ex Navy SEAL,etc.?

Mark Walberg (who is actually a great actor, watch the Departed for proof), Matt Damon, and Samuel L Jackson (old, but still the man). There are still a few.

Check out Tony Jaa. Not American and definitely not "toned down" but he's got the ass-kicking everyman thing down.

I forgot about "The Rock." I can't find a reason to dislike him. His acting is better than Vin Diesel.

Matt Damon, for confirmation, any of the Bourne movies (but particularly "Identity").

Dwayne Johnson/The Rock, not a GREAT actor, but not awful either, has a good sense of humor about the whole thing.

The thing about war/action movies is that often they cast a bunch of good actors that are still relatively young, but not established yet. They shave their heads and get a great performance that launches their career. Think Platoon. I think this is better bet. It requires a little more work on casting, but it's cheaper for the studio in the long run, i.e. more profit.
