American trying to find the best hotel rates in Europe

Sign in to disble this ad
This question goes to the Europeans and TB world travelers:

What sites do you use for finding the best deals on hotel rates for Europe? My wife and I will be in Europe Sept to Oct of this year, and if anyone has any suggestions for sites to help us find lodgins, it would be appreciated. We'll be going to Warsaw->Berlin->Munich, if it matters.

Danke in advance.

All of them are okay. I generally try to get recommendations of friends. In many, if not most, European cities, the "star" rating of a hotel coincides with an NYC star rating. Expect 2 stars to have small animals possibly running around. 3 stars to have a serviceable bathroom. Don't worry, you get used to it. Bed and breakfasts are often the way to go if you can find them.

Thanks, Mark. We had been using Expedia but not the other two.

Considering your itinerary, you should really stuff Prague in there.

That's actually part of the plan. Depending on our rental car agreement, we may go Berlin to Prague to Munich, but if we can't get that cleared then we'll go from Berlin to Munich and then take a train to Prague.

If you go to Prague, staying with a local is a great option. Granted this was 1993, but when I hopped off the train there were a bunch of people with 3 ring binders showing pictures of their home accommodations. I picked some old couple with a nice looking place and paid $7/night to stay in their home with a basic breakfast every morning. Staying with a local is an excellent way to experience a city.

If you're into it a lot of hostel's have private rooms and even apartments they rent out. www.hostelworld.com is a pretty good resource. It's a really different environment and way to see places. The staff tend to be some of the nicest people you'll meet who love to pull out the little tourist map and mark out all the cool places you can go and tell you where the good restaurants are.
