Does anyone else notice a sort of anti French sentiment from Americans?
"We saved their a**** in WW1 and WW2 the dumb cheese lovers!"
I keep hearing comments like that and was wondering if anyone else hears this stuff? And why is this feeling is present?

Thank you to the French. Oh, and your toast awesome too.

I'm the farthest thing from being close to up on my history but didn't the French totally do us a solid by helping us out in the American Revolution or is that too far back for typical Americans to care? I dunno.

I don't understand it either but I do know people who hate the French...

He explains it perfectly.
You're welcome.

Everyone assumes it's true so it gets repeated everywhere as kind of a stereotype joke. Before you know it all Americans are supposed to think that the French are a bunch of cheese eating surrender monkeys.
But nobody I know thinks that way. You can ask all your friends and acquaintances what they personally think of the French and very few will parrot the stereotype - yet everyone knows what the stereotype is. It's obviously one of those things that gets magnified WAAAAAAY out of proportion by irresponsible portrayal and repetition in the popular culture.

Actually, most French people I have met are nice people, just like everyone else. Just on a whole, nobody likes the French, cause you're not supposed to like the French.
Kind of like Americans...

Stereotypes are based on truth.

Everyone knows the British hate the French. I mean, just watch a Monty Python sketch

Confusing n'est-ce pas?

Or maybe because French people despise hypocrisy and there's lots of it in America. Stuff like "we throw nukes at people, but nobody else can have a nuke or we will nuke them" kind of makes people react against America and Americans will react back... Sort of... |

I have never found French people who whon't speak English (or at least try) if they know how. Most older French don't know how to speak English and most younger French only have English taught to them up to the end of high school so its not like everyone speaks English. Most have only basic English. The exception being people who work in international businesses, most people speak fluent English in that category (regardless of age).
That said, the French (taken as a whole) have their idiosyncrises much like any other country. Some of the stereotypes have truth to them, others (ie not shaving armpits etc) are almost completely false.
