Android fans: NookCOLOR & Honeycomb - match made in heaven

Sign in to disble this ad
With Barnes and Noble's NookCOLOR, you can root the device and run Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). There some limitations of course in doing so...

Cool thing though, is that you can right now get the NookCOLOR for ~$200 on eBay:

Mine's en route to me... can't wait to get it

Let me know how smooth it runs. I have been looking for a cheap tablet to use as a portable sheet music reader.

Will do. I don't know when it'll be here exactly, and I'm going to be only marginally available to play with it, so it might be awhile before I get to rooting etc.

I doubt I'll even turn it on before it's rooted... easy way to root this too is to just load up an SD card with the image... then you don't even touch the stock system. I already have the SD card ready

The hard part will be migrating my apps (I don't think they have the app store working yet) and actually using it...

Eh, that's simple. The apk's will be in /system/app. You can push them over with ADB, then run chmod to edit the permissions. Use permission 644. Yes, you need to set permissions on the apps. But no, not full control. No guys from PP dev work on Android apps.

So I don't need to 777 them? I've never migrated apps, so it'll be a learning experience. ADB?

ADB = Android Debug Bridge. It is a command line tool you can use to manage the Android OS. Pushing and pulling apps can be hazardous when the device is running, so you reboot into recovery and use ADB to get your work done. You can also use a terminal emulator app from the D1, but I prefer to do everything with ADB in recovery.

Awesome. My APKs aren't there . I moved a lot of my apps to my SD card awhile ago, so I just have to find where it puts them there...

Gotcha. Well each app usually has it's own folder on the SD card. Some may share a universal location.

There should still be several APK's in /system/app.

Yeah, I can't find them on the SD card. Weird. I'll have to look some other day. There's lots in the ./system/app folder, but pretty much just the default ones, which I assume most of will be there with the image for 3.0

reading through this makes me wish I'd pursued computer programming instead of Economics as a major.

Reading stuff in economics would have the same effect on me, and I don't like computer programming.

Well, Dude, you either just cost me 200 dollars or saved me 50, depending on how you look at it, I guess.

On a sort-of related note, the Nook Color seems interesting as a potential tablet, as you guys seem to be exploring, but the backlit screen really defeats the purpose of it as an eReader.
