Android phones...

Sign in to disble this ad
So some of you may know that I have never owned a cell phone. I jumped head first into the world of the internet circa 1995 and even though I work for Vonage, I really only communicate with people via IM and email... so I've had no need to talk to people while not at my house.

(the wife has had a prepaid emergency cell phone for YEARS... and we do use it when a cell phone is needed while hooking up with people and such)

Giving the nod to Apple's iPhone and the Blackberry for paving the way... I really think the Mobile Interwebz world has caught up to where I am ready to join the fun.

Due to the coverage I've experienced with my wife's prepaid Sprint/Nextel phone, we've chosen Sprint as our carrier and we're getting the "Everything Data" plan

She has chosen the LG Lotus for herself (I only mention in case anyone has comments / experiences on that phone... but I'd rather stick to all things Android) and I'm going with the Samsung Moment...

I've seen a couple threads mentioning Android based phones, but the main one is specific to the Motorola Droid.

Any Android phone users?
Any Samsung Moment owners?

I had the choice between the Moment and the HTC Hero but the Moment has an 800Mhz proc (Hero has a 528Mhz) and a slide out keyboard... also even though the HTC gui on the Hero is way slicker than the plain generic Android one on the Moment, I think having to wait for a 3rd party's gui updates to move to new OS releases might not make the slickness worth it.

My main reason for going Android over Blackberry, Windows or iPhone is I run a Subsonic music server at home and the guy that wrote it also wrote an Android app to interface to it

What's everyone using?
What are some good online resources?
What are some killer apps?

I'm ordering mine Thursday

Right on. I have that app on my Motorola Droid. I love it. I tap into a server another TB'er created. I am actually uploading music to it right now.

I love it since I plug it into my car stereo and rock out to whatever music I want to listen to on the server. Plus, I can download all those songs to my Droid.

You can hit the Market to get all your apps. I'll post a list of my favorites in a little bit. It's a long list.

I spend a lot of time over at Android Forums to learn about the OS and apps for it.

Sweet! I turned Ray on to the awesomeness of Subsonic
(assuming that's who you are talking about!)

I'll sign up at that forum... the main phone place I've been reading and learning is sprintusers.com but that was more plan wise (cell phone virgin here remember). Phone plans are friggin confusing!!!

Thanks for the tip, MJ. Any apps you care to recommend?
I'm still getting the hang of my Droid, I can do basic use but need a kickstart in terms of becoming a more advanced user.

LOoks like James turned me on to the Moment as well. Seems to have what I need, as opposed to the BB I was looking forward to. James, let me know how your phone works out for you~!

Samsung puts out some really good phones. I had an Instinct, but alas, I actually lost it!

Sure thing... Amazon had a delay (though it has never said not in stock for the phones I ordered) and they are shipping tomorrow. I upped the shipping to overnight so I should have it Thursday

still diggin' my Android phone... I got up the nerve to jump into the world of 'non-official' kernels and such. I'm running Zefie's Kernel ZE13.3 (but I see 14.1 was made current yesterday). I've been using an Aero theme on DxTop as my home screen replacement. Still playing with a lot of different apps, but my main use is still Subsonic

Same here. I have mine all hacked up now with a faster kernel, overclocked, a custom ROM, and a totally customized theme.

For me, performance shot through the roof and battery life sank like a lead balloon.
