Ankle 'enhancements'

Sign in to disble this ad

yessiree, that's right ... I recently made a significant invensment in titanium plates and screws ... for my wife. she shattered her ankle and "broke everything possible to break" according to the ortho surgeon who performed emergency surgery the following day. he claimed it was the most difficult surgery he's performed in the last 20 years. as you can see in this x-ray taken right after surgery, there's a whole lotta screws in those plates ... and several other break locations that didn't require plates/screws so long as she keeps her weight off it for the coming six weeks

for those who have PM'd or e-mailed me (here at TB, my personal mail, or at the RGW website), apologies for the delay in getting back to you, and I hope you understand the circumstances causing the delays

all the best,

R

Wow, I hope she heals well and as quickly as possible. Sucks to have that happen.

Will the screws and plates and stuff be in there forever?

thanks guys - it's much appreciated!

yes, maybe. the doc says he'll revisit it in a year to see how well everything mended. until then (and possibly longer) she'll get the special treatment at airport security once she's up and independently mobile again

fwiw ... that's a scaled image - that long screw on the right is 2-1/2" long

all the best,

R

Interesting that apparently some medical supplies are things that one might see at a hardware store.

I wonder how many people with metal in them they get at airports.

It varies. From what I recall, it was usually about 1-3 people every 500 passengers or so who had metal in them. For the most part, it's usually seniors with hip and knee replacements, although you would get the odd 20 year old with both hips replaced. One guy had a fake shoulder, which he injured by driving his bicycle into the propeller on a boat (I don't recall the specifics, but his wife couldn't stop laughing at how dumb he was).

Lol, that must have been amusing. A 20 year old with both hips replace I would assume... car accident?

Not sure. I didn't ask. Some people aren't very open to small talk with airport security, I have no idea why. My buddy has both his hips replaced, but that's due to personal health issues, so I didn't feel comfortable asking this guy about what happened.

My fiance has almost the exact same screws and plates as your wife in that pic! I think her plate has only 3 or 4 screws in it though. The doc was saying she should probably leave it in just to avoid having another surgery, and so the ankle would continue to be reinforced, but the fact is months later she can feel the screws inside her bones and through her skin, and that makes her want them removed.

Not saying you did or should of, just trying to think of what would necessitate that in a 20 year old, and bad car accident was the first thing I thought of. Or getting hit by a car while crossing the street or something.

See, I would think that was kinda cool myself, but yeah, probably most people would find it a nuisance.

I've got a 6" plate of metal in my ankle along with 6 screws holding it in and I've never set off a security device anywhere, in places like airports and government buildings and with neither the walk through nor hand held devices.

The doctor told me that it can stay in as long as I live with no ill effects, but if I start to have problems like arthritis or something to get it checked and evaluated for possible removal. I haven't had any problems in 14 years.

Hope your wife has a speedy and low-pain recovery. Good luck to you both!

Gentlemen, we can rebuild her. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic woman. Rodent's wife will be that woman. Better than she was before. Better, stronger, faster.

As someone still healing from a broken foot, I feel for your wife. Despite the pain, there is a lot of anger and frustration due to the lack of mobility. While she's down, here's something you could tinker with......... Cupholders for crutches.

Hope she has a easy recovery. Be prepared for anger and misdirected hostility that will make PMS look like a lazy walk in the park.
