Ok, so last night I went to upgrade the memory on my hp m8430f from 4gb to 6gb. I put in the 2 new pieces of memory and what happens? the pc took longer to start up and no picture on the monitor. so, I try moving the memory around to different slots but got the same result. henceforth, I put the original memory back in, but the computer still doesn't run right.
any idea what the heck happened?
thanks.
john

-Mike | reputable place, www.4allmemory.com, same place I always get it from. I upgraded 3 other machines from them no problemo. but what I don't get is why the machine I tried to upgrade last night is now lagging. It's reading the original 4gb, but it's running, hmmm, not right.

Check the BIOS settings and see if all the memory options match the type of RAM you put in. Then check your connections to your graphics card. Beyond that I have no idea.

The amount of RAM (in this case 4g vs. 8g) is not the only factor in determining how well the RAM works in a person's computer. Another thing to consider is that sometimes without the proper BIOS setup a certain amount of RAM will not be accessed, and if you're running dual channel RAM there's several ways things can go wrong and the computer read less than what's there. Also, double check the motherboard itself and see if it can actually support 8g of ram, don't go to the HP site. Never know, they could have got the specs wrong for the particular model computer you have.

You can change the various settings manually (if you know what you're doing) or you can choose to load "optimized", "default" or sometimes "previous" settings to see how they compare.
