Another Racism Thread: Black Dogs Discriminated against

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, it's not really a racism thread but I couldn't resist!

Seriously, I have recently become aware of a concept called "Black Dog Syndrome" that speaks to the difficulty of getting black dogs adopted. I previously had no clue until my wife and I started the process of adopting our Black Greyhound which we completed last week. As a part of my research on greyhounds, I came across a number of articles and websites that discuss this phenomenon.

Here are a few more links that discuss it ...

* Time Magazine: Do Black Dogs Face Discrimination? - TIME
* Black Pearl Dogs: Black Dog Syndrome
* The Black List: The Black List - Adopt a Black Greyhound

While neither me, nor any of these links is accusing anyone of Racism, I think this is something that folks need to be aware of as they consider their choice of dog.

Black dogs need love too!

Perhaps because black dogs leave black hair all over the place, and lighter hair is not as noticed on lighter carpets?

for me personally it goes by breed what color scheme i like. great danes i only like black ( i had one growing up.. nostalgia i guess).. greyhounds i like brindle spots on them.. or grey, or brown, or.. hell like all them.. my corgi was primarily black, i love rottweilers, i prefer a red phase pitbull, i like white poodles.. i prefer the look of a yellow lab over a chocolate or black lab.

sounds to me like people looking to much into something that really doesnt matter

but hey if you decide to get all racist against your greyhound, send him my way.

A lot of it is old superstitions that are still lurking in our culture's unconscious. It's quite unfortunate. When my dad got a dog over the summer he made a point of getting a black one for this reason.

I wouldn't purchase a black dog after the way the last one spent my money, took my car, and started telling her friends she going to be a star.

My dog is a border collie (black and white), so you can't call me racist.

I wouldn't purchase/adopt a dog based on it's color.

I treat my dog like a second class citizen of the dog world.

In all seriousness, I love my dog.

LOL we have a black and orange cat that is quite the loner as well when it comes to the other cats. Except she's an evil sack of evil so it makes sense.

Maybe it's because of this: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=9dd_1290721184

O.o

In all seriousness, though. I've volunteered a lot around here and helped out a lot of small shelters with various things and the black cats always get adopted out last, or.. sadly, not at all. Some shelters try to not take in black kitties and dogs because they know they have a slim chance of being adopted out and don't want to end up having to bring them to the animal shelter and risk them being put down. It's really unfortunate. Though, i DO believe different colored cats have different general personalities. I've fostered enough of 'em. Heh. But anyway, it's good that people are spreading the word about the discrimination and I hope this changes peoples minds about black animals. ^_^
