Any bassists who are also barbers/ hair stylists?

Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to Talkbass, and this is my first posting.
When I'm not on the road gigging, or doing recording sessions, my 'day job' is as a Barber/ Hair Stylist. It's been a great profession to work in tandem with my music career, and I've been doing this combo for years. I've met a few other musicians who do the same over the years, and was just wondering if there's any TB ers' who also do this, and if so can share their experiences with balancing the two professions! Cheers!

Well, I'm not, but I used to cut my own hair, and still do sometimes.
Does that count?

I was hoping this was a joke thread, because if it was it would be one of the best EVER!

Most surreal thread title, possibly!

Mrs Jazz Ad is a colorist/hairdresser.
Not a job I'd want to do. She loves it though.

I started out cutting my son's hair when he was a baby because he would only let me do it and would freak out if we took him to a barber shop. Now, 2 additional kids and 15+ years later I'm not too shabby at it. Matter of fact, if I can shamelessly brag, I'm pretty damn good at it. Oddly enough a cousin of mine owns and runs a barber shop, so it might run in the family who knows

Thats cool relic! I think a lot of us barber/stylists start by cutting friends/family hair and expand on the natural talent. I really relate directly many of the skills I use in hair cutting to my music as well, as far as the creative process is concerned. I think being detail minded, and being efficient yet analytical cross both art forms.

Would you please come to my house and give me a trim? I've been getting my sister to cut mine for me the last few years but I forgot to ask her when I went home this christmas... I can't stand the hairdressers. Just thinking about it I can feel the pain in my wallet, the awkwardness of standing there while some lady whom I have nothing in common with hangs around my face for 15minutes with a sharp object, and then the dissatisfaction afterwards.

I'm sure you're very lovely though...

That's the funny thing about it - at first it was just an "out of necessity" thing with no thought to the creative process, but after a while it did become almost like an art. It's hard to explain, but there's something very satisfying in taking an unruly mop and turning it into something nice and neat. I'm no stylist though and very much an amateur, but still, I surprise myself sometimes

My mum was good at cutting our hair.

It involved putting a thing on the clippers, either number two or four, and then shaving it all of.

Thats why I stopped letting her cut it at about age 10 I have probably only had it cut about 5 times since then :P

I cut my own hair every 2 weeks or so. Sometimes I'll make funny hawks that I'll shave off after the weekend. I think this friday I will only shave half my head, and a stripe on the other half.
